How do I know if I should be a nurse?

If you have a strong interest in helping others, have good communication skills and are a high achieving academic student with a strong aptitude in the sciences, nursing may be the career for you! 

Working in health care as a CNA will help you to better determine if this is the right educational path. Networking with others in the College of Nursing will help you sense if it is a good fit for your skills and abilities.

 

What classes are required?

Nursing courses

Total of 60:

  • 30 completed as part of associate degree
  • 30 completed as part of the collaborative program
324 Orientation to Clinical Major 1 credit
341 Theoretical Foundations 4 credits
434 Nursing Research 3 credits
317 Health Assessment 4 credits
444 Community Health 3 credits
437 Leadership & Management 4 credits

General Education Courses
In addition to the 60 credits of nursing courses, students are required to complete 60 credits of general education courses. Includes pre-nursing required courses (30 credits), campus specific degree requirements and electives. Electives are courses of your choosing and can be either general education or nursing electives.

Advanced composition 3 credits
Ethnic Studies (Diversity Requirement) 3 credits

Math (Modern Math, Statistics or PBIS) 3 credits
Nonwestern Culture 3 credits
PE (Active Lifestyle) 2 credits
Social Sciences 3 credits
Electives (you must have 120 credits to graduate)

Health Requirements

A list of immunizations, including documentation from a health care provider for 2 MMR's (measles, mumps and rubella) or titers showing immunity, varicella titer showing immunity, and TB skin test (2 step needed or documentation of 2 annual tests), along with a xerox copy of both sides of your Professional CPR card is required prior to your first clinical course. These forms are a part of the admitting process. Fees for immunizations, titers,TB test and CPR must be paid by the student.
