Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) requirements for the Accelerated Online BSN Program

All applicants to the Accelerated Online Bachelor’s to BSN Program must obtain a certificate as a nursing assistant (CNA) prior to the program start date. Completing the CNA provides initial exposure to the health care field and understanding of basic concepts important in nursing care.

The CNA is obtained by completing a Certified Nursing Assistant course which includes a clinical component, and then passing the state certification examination. The certification can be from any state; it does not have to be Wisconsin certification.

CNA courses are typically offered through technical colleges and health care facilities (particularly long-term care facilities). Many long-term care facilities offer employment upon completion of the course. Some facilities reduce or waive the tuition in return for employment upon course completion. CNA courses tend to be in great demand. There can be long waiting lists. Thus, applicants are advised to enroll in a CNA course well in advance of application for admission.

To be considered for admission to the Accelerated Online Bachelor’s to BSN Program, applicants must either have the certification course completed before the application deadline OR submit proof of registration in a course that will be completed prior to the program start date, with enough time to also take the certification examination. Please note: In most states, allow four to six weeks after course completion for the certification examination.

Applicants must submit proof of state certification prior to the program start date. That is, admitted students will not be permitted to begin the program without the CNA certificate on file with the Accelerated Online BSN Program Office.

Work experience as a CNA is strongly recommended. Experience as a CNA strengthens the application to the Accelerated Online BSN Program.
