Purpose:

Membership in this society is a special opportunity to share in the recognition of excellence in the nursing profession. The faculty hope that you will consider applying for membership in the Eta Pi Chapter of SigmaTheta Tau.

ELIGIBILITY:

Candidates for regular membership in the Eta Pi chapter of Sigma Theta Tau, International are considered without regard to race, age, gender, creed, color, national origin, disability or other legally protected category. There are three categories of regular membership: students in a basic nursing program; students in graduate nursing programs; and nurse leaders. The qualifications for each category follow.

Students in a Basic Nursing Program

The basic program is defined as a baccalaureate or higher degree program which leads to the first professional nursing degree_ One half of the program in nursing needs to be completed. Basic students who are elected shall rank not lower than the highest 35 percent of their class in scholarship, with a minimum of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.

Students in a Graduate Program

Students in graduate programs are eligible if they have achieved a grade point average of at least 3.5 on a 4.0 scale, or its equivalent, and have completed a minimum of one­quarter of the required graduate curriculum. The candidates will have demonstrated. superior academic achievement, academic integrity, and professional leadership potential.

Nurse Leaders

A nurse who is a registered nurse, legally recognized to practice in his/her country with a minimum of a baccalaureate degree of the equivalent in any field, and who has demonstrated achievement in nursing, shall be eligible for membership.

 

Qualifications:

• Candidates shall have demonstrated superior scholastic achievement, evidence of professional leadership potential and/or marked achievement in the field of nursing.

• Candidates shall be selected from students enrolled in accredited baccalaureate and master's programs in nursing:

1. Baccalaureate Programs

Students who have completed at least one-half of the required curriculum and have demonstrated ability in nursing shall be eligible. Students shall have a grade point average of at least 3.0 on a four-point scale or its equivalent, i.e., B or the second highest grade of the institution as indicated by the official record of grades.

2. Programs of Graduate Study

Programs of study include Master, Post-Master, Doctoral, Post-Doctoral. Nurses matriculated for graduate study in nursing are eligible for membership if they have maintained a 3.5 grade point average or above (on a four-point scale). Full-time graduate students may be eligible upon completion of one-third of their academic program.

A graduate nurse with a baccalaureate or higher degree who has demonstrated marked achievement in the field of nursing shall be eligible for membership in any chapter.

• The top 35% of the undergraduate and graduate students who meet the eligibility requirements will be sent an introductory letter and an Intent Form to complete and return to the chapter Faculty Counselor. Nurse Leaders who wish to join the chapter may call the College of Nursing for contact information of the Eligibility Chair.

• Following an evaluation of the submitted credentials, potential members are notified by the Chapter regarding their acceptance. Additional information regarding completing the application process will be given at that time.

• New members are invited to participate in an induction ceremony held April each year.
