Blog Entry for the Week Ending February 3rd

by Hilgendorf, Grady last modified Feb 03, 2017 07:59 PM
A re-cap of things that I did during this week, problems I have run into, and what I plan to accomplish before the next post. Week 1: January 30th - February 3rd.

Good morning/afternoon/night,

This is the first report on my progress since the start of this project. This week, I successfully installed a virtual machine onto my 6 year old MacBook Pro laptop. Along with the virtual machine, I downloaded and installed an Ubuntu OS that one of my classmates made. After actually starting the virtual machine with this Ubuntu OS, I quickly realized that my laptop barely has enough RAM to run the OS as there are very sever spikes in unresponsiveness during the couple sessions that I've done so far.

After working a little bit to get used to the new layout and positioning of applications, I tried and succeeded at installing Plone to the virtual machine. Though it seemed to go smoothly at first, my virtual machine froze two times during the process and forcing me to terminate the machine altogether and start over. but after a while, I finally finished the install and got Plone running.

Before the next time that you hear from me on this site I hope to achieve a couple things. The first is that I want to have started and finished reading chapters 5 and 6 in the Mastering Plone Development that we are focusing on along with reading "Build Something at Slate.com", Richard Stallman’s essay Why Open Source misses the point of Free Software. I will definitely need to figure out how to play around with Plone to be a valuable asset to any team I am placed on.

That is all for this week. I look forward to the next post of my progress on my ongoing project.
