Communication Major

Recommended for students who wish to prepare for professions in the various areas of speech communication or theater, or who wish to pursue graduate study.

Students entering under the 2011-2013 UW Oshkosh Bulletin will complete the newly revised curriculum in Communication Studies. Over the past two years, the communication faculty and students have worked together to develop a new curriculum that draws upon the strengths of our faculty and meets the needs of students in the new millennium. The NEW Communication Studies Major will consist of a core of required courses, which all students will complete, and four Content Focus Areas within which students can choose to focus their elective courses.

These areas are

  1. Rhetoric and Public Advocacy
  2. Organizational Communication
  3. Interpersonal Communication
  4. Communication Generalist.

In addition to our new major, we also offer revised minors in Communication Studies, Organizational Communication and Speech Communication Education.

Please review our major and minor advising sheets to get an overview of our program.

If you entered the University of Wisconsin System prior to 2011, you may be covered under a different bulletin. Our advising sheet for those completing the 2003-2011 curriculum is below:

If you are unsure whether you should complete the "old" or "new" major, please consult the handout below which covers the differences between the program and advises students on choosing their courses.
