Below are answers to the some of the most frequently asked questions about the commencement ceremony:
How will I receive information regarding commencement?
1. Commencement information and updates will be emailed to all UW Oshkosh students who have registered to graduate periodically throughout the semester via their UW Oshkosh email account.
2. Comprehensive information will be available on the commencement web site at www.uwosh.edu/commencement.
3. A brochure will be sent to the families (using students' home addresses) of UW Oshkosh prospective graduates in spring.
4. We will share insights, reminders, photos and more via Facebook at "I'm graduating from UW Oshkosh."
Which commencement ceremony do I attend if I graduate in the summer?
Summer graduates may participate in either the May or December Commencements. By completing the application for graduation you will automatically be entered into our system and receive information regarding both ceremonies.
Summer graduates do not indicate in advance which ceremony they will be attending: we will be prepared at both. Simply arrive at Kolf Sports Center 45 minutes prior to the respective ceremony to register.
Do I need to register for the commencement ceremony?
By completing your application for graduation, you also complete the necessary form to participate in the ceremony. By checking the official list, you confirm that you are eligible to participate in the ceremony. There are no other forms you need to complete to participate in the commencement ceremony.
Commencement ceremony registration takes place 45 minutes prior to the ceremony in the lower level of Kolf. At this time you will receive your name card and honor cords (if eligible).
I'm not able to attend my ceremony, what should I do?
Graduates who will not be attending the ceremony do not need to notify the commencement office in advance. Only those who register at Kolf (45 minutes prior to the ceremony) on commencement day will have their names read during the ceremony.
What is the official list and where can I find it?
All students who have registered to graduate and have met the criteria for graduation will have their name posted to the official commencement listing (FERPA students excluded). Students names, hometowns and honors will be printed on this list.
The undergraduate list will first be available to students during Countdown to Commencement where graduation examiners will be available to answer questions. Following Countdown, corrections will be made to this list and it will then be posted to the registrar's website for one week, October 19th-23rd. Students may contact their graduation examiner with questions or changes to this list. The final list will appear in the printed commencement program, available at the ceremony.
Graduate students can also find their list at Countdown to Commencement or access their list from the Graduate Studies website. The Graduate Studies Office will notify graduate students when their list becomes available.
Where do I go when I arrive on Saturday?
Commencement is held at Kolf Sports Center, 785 High Avenue. Students will report to the lower level to register (maps will be posted on the doors directing students to the appropriate rooms). Guests should make their way to the upper level where the ceremony will take place.
I am graduating from two colleges, where should I go?
Students who are graduating from more than one college (e.g. College of Letters & Science and College of Business) can choose which college they would like to walk with at the ceremony. Registration cards will be placed in both line-up rooms for you.
How do I get my honor cord?
Gold (university honors) cords for cum laude, magna cum laude, and summa cum laude and white (college honors) cords will be distributed during registration on commencement day. There is no charge for these cords. University Honors status can be verified by checking the official commencement list.
Do Graduate (Masters) students receive honor cords?
UW Oshkosh does not designate academic honors at the university level for graduate students. Since all graduating graduate students must have a GPA of 3.00 or better, the UW Oshkosh Graduate Council believes awarding honors overstates what is already a higher level of achievement in comparison to undergraduate study. Further, the Graduate Council believes honors blur the distinction between undergraduate and graduate education if both were the same.
Some programs confer honors within their program, discipline or College. These honors are recognized every April at the UW Oshkosh Honors and Awards ceremony and are published in the official program of this ceremony. Please check with your program or College to find out if they confer honors and the requirements for such honors. It is acceptable at the university commencement ceremony for graduate students to wear the cords or stoles of their discipline's respective honor society.
Be in touch with your program or the Graduate Studies office if you have any questions about this information regarding honors.
Is there a rehearsal for commencement?
There is no rehearsal for commencement.
Do I need tickets for the ceremony?
No. Tickets are not required for family and friends who want to attend the ceremony. General seating is on a first come, first served basis in the bleachers. There is NO LIMIT to the number of guests that you may invite.
Do we need parking passes?
Free parking is available in all University lots and ramps on commencement day.
A sections of Lot 13 has been designated for individuals with disabilities and those with mobility issues. These lots require a handicap permit or special parking pass. In addition, guests without disability permits should not park in any space marked handicapped.
