Master's apparel differs from that worn by recipients of bachelor's degrees. The gown for the master's degree has an oblong sleeve, open at the wrist. The sleeve base hangs down in the traditional manner. The rear part of its oblong shape is square cut, and the front part has an arc cut away. The gown is so designed and supplied with fasteners that it may be worn open or closed.
Masters regalia also includes a black tassel, mortarboard and hood. The hood corresponds with the students' academic discipline. The designations are as follows.
Business Administration: drab (beige)
Education and Human Services: light blue
Letters and Science: gold
Nursing: apricot
Public Administration: peacock blue
Social Work: citron
All graduate students are honor students. The hooding ceremony is symbolic of the significant achievement of master's graduates. Honors cords are not worn by masters candidates. However, it is acceptable for graduate students to wear the stoles of their discipline's respective honor society. Please contact your department for information regarding your eligibility to wear an honor stole.
If you are considering wearing a cap, hood or gown that you have not purchased from University Books and More, you must get prior approval from University Books & More. Please call 424-2381 or email Tiffany Cummings at cummingst@uwosh.edu for an appointment.
