Why Do I Need a Mentor?

A mentor at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh can help you to do the following:

  • Have a smooth transition to UW Oshkosh and into your major
  • Feel comfortable talking to professors
  • Build a relationship with an expert who knows how to navigate the campus and how to succeed in college
  • Learn more about career opportunities and ways to get the most out of your degree
  • Boost your confidence in yourself and your abilities
  • Increase your success in college including better performance in classes and a higher GPA
  • Learn about job, award, and scholarship opportunities
  • Set goals for yourself and achieve those goals

Why Would a Mentor Want to Meet With Me?

A common image of professors is one of their having their heads stuck in books or in the past. Yet, like most stereotypes, this one bears little relationship to who professors truly are here at UW Oshkosh. Our instructors want to meet with you for the following reasons:

  • Share knowledge of how to succeed in college
  • Build a relationship with you
  • Learn more about the student experience here
  • Increase your success in courses
  • Promote awareness of what UW Oshkosh values

Most importantly, your mentor cares about your success here at UW Oshkosh both in the classroom and beyond it. Connecting with a student makes mentors themselves feel more connected to college life and provides them with an opportunity to make a positive contribution to the campus. A mentor wants to be a guide, advisor, and advocate for you as you journey through UW Oshkosh.
