Will CAPP credits transfer to my chosen college or university?

How Do Credits Transfer?

CAPP courses are regularly cataloged courses of the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh appearing in the University Bulletin and must be accepted by all University of Wisconsin System campuses. However, the courses may not meet specific major and degree requirements at UW campuses. Most other colleges and universities also accept UW Oshkosh CAPP course credits. College policies vary in regard to transfer credit and may be applied differently from year to year and from student to student. Unlike University of Wisconsin System schools, other colleges and universities may decide at any time to change their policies, or refuse to recognize UW Oshkosh CAPP or other universities’ courses for credit. Many colleges and universities, while not automatically recognizing CAPP or other colleges’ credits, may do so if the student petitions for acceptance. The key to transferring credits is to make sure you, as the student, have all of the information and documentation that may be helpful to you.

Your CAPP course work is of value even if not accepted for full credit. CAPP courses are like many courses that students regularly take at other institutions - there are no guarantees that your college will give your work recognition. However, colleges may recognize UW Oshkosh course work for some or all of the following:

  1. Full credit toward graduation, degree, and major credit.
  2. Elective credits applicable toward graduation.
  3. Placement purposes or to exempt you from otherwise mandatory courses, but not for credit toward graduation.

Gaining Credit Recognition

The place to begin for any consideration of your CAPP course efforts is to obtain an official transcript and/or have one sent directly to the college where you wish credit to be given. Official transcripts are available ONLY from the UW Oshkosh Records office (see the section “Getting an Official Transcript”). Your high school records may show you took a CAPP course, but are not considered as an official university record. Remember that your credits are credits from the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh - you should refer to them as such - NOT as “CAPP” credits, or “high school” credits when dealing with college officials. Sometimes the transcript will be all you need to gain recognition of your UW Oshkosh credits. Out os state schools are not familiar with the CAPP name, but will recognize the University of Wisconsin system. You might also use the term “concurrent enrollment” program to describe CAPP, if asked.

If there are questions or difficulties about credit transfer, you should determine who at your college has the power to make transfer decisions. This is NOT typically the Admission Officer or Registrar. Registrars generally interpret, not make, transfer policy. Usually your academic advisor will know with whom you should speak. If not, the Dean or Department Chairperson will know the procedure you should follow.

If there seems to be confusion, or if you feel that you are not getting appropriate consideration of your UW Oshkosh credits, you may choose to speak with the chairperson of the academic department where your work would normally be recognized. The chairperson can examine the work you did and decide if it is comparable to work in courses offered by the academic department.

Before talking to the chairperson you should be prepared with the following:

1. Have a certified copy of your UW Oshkosh transcript.
2. Have a copy of the UW Oshkosh Course Bulletin description of your course at the time it was offered. This is available on campus, by mail, or on the UW Oshkosh Registrar’s web site for recent Bulletins.
3. Have a copy of the syllabus used for your course. This was given to you by your UW Oshkosh CAPP instructor and lets the reader know the text(s) used, material covered, and course standards.
4. Have a portfolio of the work you did in the course. A sample of the work you’ve done is the best way of demonstrating the rigor of the course, the effort you’ve put forward, and the knowledge you’ve gained.

Finally, you can contact the CAPP office at UW Oshkosh. We can clarify any misunderstandings about the program and the nature of the work you’ve done. Don’t take no for an answer until you reach this point!

Getting an Official Transcript

Remember that your transcripts will not be sent until you (not your high school) requests them. It is your responsibility to do so. Please read these instructions carefully.

To obtain your University of Wisconsin Oshkosh transcript, you must submit a signed, written request. You can either go to the Records Office to complete a transcript request form or download the form from the UW Oshkosh Registrar’s website and send your request to the Records Office. An official transcript is printed on security paper and bears the signature of the Registrar and the embossed school seal. Official transcripts are mailed. Faxed transcripts are not considered official. Any and all UW Oshkosh courses for which you received a grade are included on one transcript including CAPP and Youth Options courses.

Transcripts cost $5 per transcript for regular service (3-5 day processing) and $8 per transcript for rush service (24 hour processing). Payment must be received before the transcript request will be processed. Checks or money orders made payable to UW Oshkosh, credit cards (Visa, MasterCard, or American Express) or cash are accepted. Transcripts will not be issued to students who have any outstanding financial obligations to the University. If you have any further questions regarding obtaining a transcript - visit - http://www.uwosh.edu/registrar/transcripts/

Make Sure Your Transcripts are Current

Grades take time to post to your transcript. For most classes you should wait a minimum of 2 to 3 weeks after your instructor submits your grades before requesting your transcript. If you are expecting additional credits - such as retroactive foreign language credits - to be posted to your transcripts you should wait at least 4 to 5 weeks before requesting your transcript be sent. You can always call the Records office (920) 424-1199 before requesting your transcript to make sure your grades are posted.

In-person Requests

The Records Office is located in the Registration Office, Dempsey Room 130. They accept transcript requests Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-4 p.m. A photo ID is required when picking up transcripts.
