Why has memoir risen in our time? Why are seven of ten nonfiction paperback bestsellers memoir or autobiography? Memoirist and critic Thomas Larson, author of The Memoir and the Memoirist, examines the causes for memoir’s popularity. Are we reacting to a society gone crazy with fake personas and instant celebrity, or, because we live longer, do we find ourselves blessed with the luxury of shaping our own legacies?

Thomas Larson is the author of The Memoir and the Memoirist: Reading and Writing Personal Narrative. His book, now in its third printing, is the first of its kind to evaluate the dramatic rise of the memoir in the last twenty years and to explore the craft and purpose of contemporary memoir writing.
