Subject:
Description: Built during a time of great social division in Oshkosh, the Grand Opera House has become an important symbol of the city’s identity. From the opulence of opening night to its role as an X-rated theater, the history of the Grand has reflected the ups and downs of Oshkosh. During the efforts to save the Grand in the 1980s, representations in public discourse celebrated the glorious past of the sawmill era. But such portrayals neglected the experiences of working class people and less glamorous periods in history. Nevertheless, at the Grand, narrative and architecture come together to enrich the role of the building as a symbol of local history, public memory, and community identity. The role of the Grand in Oshkosh and the public discourse and debate that surrounds it lend the potential to facilitate broader participation in the civic life of the city.

Description: Richard Roeper hailed this film from producer Guillermo Del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth) as “a creepy, spooky little movie.” Laura returns to the long-deserted orphanage where she was raised many years ago, intending to re-open it as a refuge for sick children. As she and her husband begin to revive the building, her adopted son begins to make mysterious new friends. Then he disappears. This film, directed by Juan Antonio Bayona, was Spain’s official entry in the 2007 Academy Awards.
Rated R. 110 minutes. Spain, 2007.
Introduced by Dr. Elena Gonzalez-Muntaner, Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures
