Imagine yourself as a graduating senior with a younger sibling who will be starting college next year.  What advice would you offer to this brother or sister who is setting off on the path of a liberal education?  What experiences should your sibling anticipate—or seek out—that might afford a richer comprehension of liberal education's ideals?

Deadline:

  • due in late October 2008 - actual deadline to be announced
Judges:

  • Faculty and instructional staff members from the four divisions in the College of Letters and Science

The purpose of this scholarship contest is to have students to think about the significance of the liberal arts. The winner of the competition will be the person who makes the best case for his or her views, no matter what they may be, about the liberal arts. The judges will consider the following qualities of the submissions: the originality of the ideas presented, the organizational structure of the essay and the quality of the writing itself.

Your thoughtful consideration of this matter can help the college fulfill its mission within the university as well as the larger community, and the winning essay will be posted on the COLS web site to be shared with all visitors to the site. The committee thanks you for taking the time to think about this very important aspect of your education.
