College of Letters and Science
Liberal Arts Scholarship Recipient 2007-2008

The College of Letters and Science is pleased to announce the recipient of the annual Liberal Arts Scholarship offered by the College. Cheryl Davis, a history major, has won the $1,000 award. Her essay was characterized by the judges as delightful and refreshing, clearly demonstrating that she understands the value of a liberal education.

This year's essay prompt, in conjunction with the UW System Liberal Arts Scholarship competition, asked applicants to respond to the following:

Imagine yourself as a graduating senior with a younger sibling who will be starting college next year.  What advice would you offer to this brother or sister who is setting off on the path of a liberal education?  What experiences should your sibling anticipate—or seek out—that might afford a richer comprehension of liberal education's ideals?

Ms. Davis, described by her professors as "an intelligent, curious and perceptive student," who is "driven by intellectual curiosity," provides sound advice: "Your exposure to many disciplines enables you to discover the field of your passion." Entitled "Choices of Success," her essay shows her heightened insight while it skillfully illustrates the "beauty of a liberal education."

We extend our sincerest congratulations to Ms. Davis, and we offer our warmest wishes as she continues her studies in the College of Letters and Science.
