Alumni Profile: Jan Gilles
Gilles achieved lifelong goal by completing ALPECP at UW Oshkosh
Jan Gilles, ’09, decided to fulfill an educational dream when she was 52-years-old, a feat in itself she said. She graduated with a bachelor’s in education and licensure in Early Childhood Education (ECE) through the Accelerated Licensure Program for Early Childhood Professionals (ALPECP.)
With determination and a hard work ethic Gilles passed both PRAXIS exams (her biggest obstacles) and graduated Suma Cum Laude while balancing working full-time at Encompass Early Education and Care Children’s Day Out a not-for-profit organization in Green Bay, being a student and commuting.
“For me personally, it was my lifelong goal to complete my degree. It took a strong work ethic and lots of perseverance, but I would absolutely do it all over again,” Gilles said.
ALPECP, a two year program, is designed for nontraditional students who, in the last three years, graduated with an associate’s degree from the Wisconsin Technical College System with a degree in ECE. It was created to fulfill the increased need for quality early childhood educators. The students must be employed 30 plus hours in a licensed at either a Head Start or public/private ECE program.
Gilles said it was necessary for her to attain her licensure in order to maintain her 4-K teaching position as an educator and center director.
Since graduating, Gilles has presented at a National Association for the Education of Young Children conference. She also received what she holds as her greatest honor to date is being nominated and receiving WFRV Channel 5’s Terrific Teacher of the Month in January of 2009.
