Interview with Marion

Student testimonial about the act! program with Marion.

Marion, act! Graduate

Marion completed the act! program

Any background information which you would like to share…

I have a Bachelor of Science degree in Biomedical Engineering from Marquette University. Before entering the act!Program, I worked for the Kimberly-Clark Corporation in Product Development and Marketing Research. Upon completion of the act! Program, my husband had the opportunity to move to Pittsburgh, PA for a new job. In one short month, we sold our house and moved. I am not currently teaching because I am in the process of obtaining PA teaching license and hoping not to have to take the PRAXIS II again!

Why did you choose to change your career to secondary teaching in math or science?

My degree is in Biomedical Engineering and although I enjoyed my school work and my initial job, I was unable to find a position that was truly related to my degree at the company I was at. In the meantime, I got married and had two children. My job at the time required a great deal of travel. I did not want to be away from my children especially while they were young. I also loved working with youth. I spent the past 7 years as the volunteer director of youth at my church. It was a job that was rewarding and so fulfilling. I knew that I wanted a career working with adolescents. I gave a lot of thought to my career switch and believed that education was the right path for me.

Why did you choose the act! program?

Once I decided that I wanted a career in education, I began searching for degree and/or licensure programs. I was frustrated by the response that I would need to get a bachelor’s degree in Education. I already had a bachelor’s degree. I was interested in finding a program that was part-time as well. The act! Program met all my needs.

What is your current profession?

I am currently a stay-at-home mom while in the process of obtaining my PA teaching license.

How are you feeling about your decision to change professions?

I am excited! I loved my student teaching experience and look forward to finding a teaching position.

What is the best part of the act! program and the alternative pathway to licensure?

You are able to complete the coursework on your own schedule with night and on-line classes. I also like the fact that you can finish the program in a reasonable amount of time based on your needs.

What has been the most challenging component of licensure?

The most challenging component for me has been obtaining licensure in a different state. I am still waiting to hear from PA regarding my license status. While in the act! Program, the most challenging component was student teaching with three young children at home.
