Graduate Certificate in Athletics Program Leadership (newly revised, program effective Fall 2011)

The Graduate  Certificate in Athletics Program Leadership is designed to provide leaders of athletics and exercise programs with the knowledge needed to meet the challenges of 21st century programs. Intended audience: Coaches, athletic trainers, athletic directors, physical education teachers, referees, and related professionals.

 

Learning Outcomes

You will:

1. Explore and apply leadership theories in athletics programs to meet current challenges.

2. Explore educational and administrative structures, roadblocks and solutions especially as they relate to athletics programming.

3. Discuss contemporary issues and solutions in athletics programs.

4. Apply knowledge of legal and ethical practices in athletics programs.

5. Discuss issues and practices related to athletics program administration.

Required Classes (3 credits each):

  1. Leadership in Educational Systems (EdL 730)

  2. Legal Aspects of Education (K-12) (EdL 735) OR Legal Aspects of Higher Education (EdL 738)

  3. Community Engagement (EdL 764)

  4. Program Development and Evaluation (EdL 766)

  5. Organization and Administration of Athletics and Physical Education (PhyEd 760)


Can this certificate program apply to a Master’s Degree?

Yes! The MS Educational Leadership degree program will accept all credits. We have carefully selected certificate program classes to be half of the masters degree in educational leadership. What a deal! You may take the remaining classes while you are working on your certificate or after it is completed.

To apply to the Certificate Program

Complete an online Graduate School application (https://apply.wisconsin.edu). Select
Graduate Certificate as reason for applying and indicate your program is the Athletics and Exercise Leadership Certificate Program. If you also want to earn your MS Educational Leadership degree, complete a second online application and indicate your program is Educational Leadership.
