FAQ

How do I register for a class and other registration related questions?

Please see the Advising page.

How do I get into my University e-mail and forward my mail somewhere else?

It's important that you periodically check your UW Oshkosh e-mail account as this is where all official information will go. Many official University communications are only sent via e-mail. Also, when professors send e-mail messages to the entire class they will most likely use your University e-mail.

If you don't want to check several e-mail accounts, you can forward your University e-mail to another address. Follow these directions.

Email passwords requirements are as follows:

  • At least 7 characters
  • Not a word found in the system dictionary
  • Not the same as the username
  • No consecutive same characters
  • At least one character from three of the following categories:
    • Upper Case (A-Z)
    • Lower Case (a-z)
    • Numbers (1-9)
    • Special characters (!@#$%^&*_+,-./)

Valid examples:

  • abcDef7 (1-upper case, 5-lower case, 1-number)
  • R@berts (1-upper case, 5-lower case, 1-special character)
  • @Bcdefg (1-upper case, 5-lower case, 1-special character)
  • A@a5678 (1-upper case, 1-lower case, 4-numbers, 1-special character)

Invalid examples:

  • ab12@$ (2-lower case, 2-numbers, 2-special characters) but fewer than 7 characters.
  • Abcde77 (1-upper case, 4-lower case, 2-numbers) but the 2-numbers are consecutive same characters.
  • @bcdefg (6-lower case, 1-special character) but only two of the four categories were used.

What is D2L?

Many courses are using our online content management system, Desire to Learn (D2L). On D2L, you may find course syllabi, readings and other expectations. Check D2L before your class starts to prepare for your first class meeting.

You access D2L from the UW Oshkosh homepage by using the TitanServices drop down on the top right corner of the homepage and selecting D2L. Log in with your e-mail username and password.

Paying for Credits, Checking Financial Aid, and Checking Grades

TitanWeb is our portal for grades, finances, class registrations and more. Here's an update on it from Grad Studies (February 2009).

There is a new feature in TitanWeb that allows you to give someone else access to three different screens of information in your TitanWeb record. The three screens are:

  • Financial aid awards

  • Grades and term statistics

  • View and pay tuition and fees

You can give the person access to just one of the screens, two, or all three. It’s up to you. So, for example, if your spouse or parent(s) would like to see this information, you can give him or her access. When you go into Titan Web, you create an account for each person. They are assigned a User I.D. and password, which allows them to log-in to Titan Web. They will only see the screens of information that you choose.  It is your responsibility to give your spouse or parent(s) the User I.D. and password.

NOTE: This doesn’t allow the person to call the university to discuss your grades, financial aid, or tuition and fees. It just allows them to see the information on Titan Web. If you want to allow them to speak with someone at the university, you need to sign a Release of Information Form in the Office of Student Affairs in Dempsey 148.

If you’d like to give access to another person log on on to TitanWeb, go to the Personal Information section (bottom left) on your student center page. The link is called "Grant Access to Others". Detailed instructions are available at: www.uwosh.edu/home/current-students/instructions-for-granting-access-in-titan-web

The privacy of your student records is covered by a federal law called the Family Educational Rights & Privacy Act (FERPA), also known as the Buckley Amendment.

More information regarding FERPA is below:

Family Educational Rights & Privacy Act (Buckley Amendment)

Students have rights regarding their education records.  These rights are covered by the Family Educational Rights & Privacy Act (FERPA).  A student has:  1) the right to inspect and review his/her education records; 2) the right to request an amendment to a record the student believes is inaccurate; 3) the right to consent to disclosures of personally identifiable information contained in education records; and 4) the right to file a complaint with the U.S. Department of Education concerning alleged failures by the university to comply with the requirements of FERPA.

There are several exceptions to the third point above, including:

  • Disclosure is permitted without consent to university officials with a legitimate educational interest.

  • Disclosure is permitted without consent to any other educational institution in which a student is currently enrolled.

Disclosure of “directory information” is permitted to non-university sources without the permission of the student.  Directory information is defined as “the student’s name, addresses, telephone numbers, e-mail address, date and place of birth, classification, major field of study, dates of attendance, full-time/part-time status, degrees and awards received, participation in officially recognized activities and sports, weight and height of members of athletic teams, and the most recent previous educational agency or institution attended by the student.”  For example, if a parent calls and asks for information regarding a student, the only information that can be legally released to the parent is directory information.

A student may sign a form in the Office of Student Affairs, Dempsey 148, which allows educational records to be released to a third party/parent.  Any student not desiring their directory information to be made public may complete a written request in Dempsey 148.  Please bring a picture I.D. with you to the office.

The University’s FERPA policy is stated in the 2008-09 Student Handbook. It is also available at:  www.uwosh.edu/registrar/policies/ferpa.php.   If you have further questions about FERPA, please contact Jean Kwaterski in the Office of Student Affairs at kwatersk@uwosh.edu or 424-4000.

Common Application Questions and Answers

Students Changing Programs:
If you have already been admitted to another graduate program at UW Oshkosh and wish to transfer to the MS Educational Leadership program, complete the Program/Plan Change Application form found on the Graduate Studies Forms page.

Library/Media Licensure Only Students:
If you are seeking library/media licensure only, you will need to apply to the MS Educational Leadership program as if you were a new student. When you write why you want to enter the program, indicate that you are a licensure only student and tell which licensure you are seeking to earn (902 initial, 902 professional, 91)

Certificate Program Students
A number of Graduate Certificate Programs exist on campus. You may complete only the Certificate program, only the MS Educational Leadership degree program, or you may earn both concurrently. Unfortunately at this point in time if you wish to earn both a certificate and degree, you must apply to both programs separately. Both types of programs use the same Office of Graduate Studies application form. Simply indicate which program you are applying to as you submit each application. Only pay the application fee once. Contact the Office of Graduate Studies if you have additional questions.

Graduate Programs and Certificates available on campus

Transcripts
If you are a University of Wisconsin Oshkosh graduate or former student, you do not need to submit official transcripts, submission of your graduate application is authorization for the Office of Graduate Studies to request your transcripts from the Records Office.

If you earned your undergraduate degree from another institution or hope to transfer credits into your program from another institution, official transcripts from that institution are required. Have them sent directly to:

Office of Graduate Studies
University of Wisconsin Oshkosh
800 Algoma Blvd.
Oshkosh WI 54901

Maintaining Your Status As A Graduate Student

In order to remain a continuing student, at least one course must be completed every two years. Otherwise, re-application to the program will be required. If you find yourself unable to take courses during a particular year, please contact us so that we will know you have not dropped out of the program entirely. We can also facilitate re-entry into the program should your inactivity last longer than two years.

Criteria for Accepting Graduate Credits

As per Office of Graduate Studies policy (see Graduate Bulletin ), up to nine credits may be transferred into the Master of Science Educational Leadership program. Credits earned prior to being accepted into the program will be evaluated when you apply. Decisions on those credits will then be indicated on your acceptance form.

Criteria for accepting credits include:

  • The course instructor is a regular graduate faculty member of an accredited institution, or the instructor has the qualifications comparable to regular graduate faculty and has the approval as an adjunct faculty member at the transfer institution.
  • The course is acceptable in a graduate degree program at the transfer institution.
  • The course syllabus is available with objectives, evaluation methods, and bibliography.
  • The course has formal meeting times and complies with the normal rule of no more than one course credit earned per week and 14 contact hours (60 minutes each) per semester credit.
  • The course is offered at a location close to a university (professional) library.
  • The academic program and/or institution are appropriately accredited.
  • The seven-year time limit is applicable for all courses to be part of a master's degree.
  • Independent study, seminars and workshops are generally not acceptable as transfer credits.

No letter grade of below a “B” will be accepted in transfer.  No more than nine (9) semester hours will be accepted in transfer, except in established cooperative programs. Credits accepted in transfer will be noted as comments on the student's transcript.   No grades will be recorded, and grades will not be included in the computation of grade point averages.

Transfer of Credits

Transfer credit is course credit earned at another institution that is accepted into your program here. Credit earned prior to program admission will be evaluated at the time of admission. Students who have been admitted to the graduate program and wish to take course work at another institution should enroll as a Guest Matriculate at that institution and secure prior approval from the Program Coordinator if you hope to apply these credits to your program. At the conclusion of the course you will need to have an official transcript sent to the Office of Graduate Studies.

Financial Aid and Full-Time Student Status

For Federal and State Financial aid purposes here at UW Oshkosh, a Graduate student is considered full-time if they carry a load of 9 credits per semester. For the Federal Student Loans, all that is needed is half-time enrollment, or a minimum of 4.5 credits per semester. At the time that  the loan is disbursed enrollment is checked and the student has to have at least 4.5 credits or the Federal Student Loan cannot be paid. Full-time enrollment is not required for loan deferment. UW Oshkosh sends monthly electronic enrollment rosters to the loan agencies. These rosters indicate any enrollment changes. When a student falls  below the 4.5 minimum half-time enrollment, the 6 month grace period for the loan "kicks in". If the student later re-enrolls in at least 4.5 credits, the loan will be placed in deferment status as soon as the agency receives the enrollment roster for the following semester. For more information, contact the UW Oshkosh Financial Aid Office.
