Appleton Visit

Fred Yeo, Lee Allinger and Jim Hoffman

We went to see Lee Allinger, District Administrator of the Appleton Area School District, on July 26, 2010. The Appleton district serves over 15,000 students through 40 different schools, which include charter schools and virtual academies.

During our time we discussed:

  • The Teacher in Residency Program that gives student teachers a more in-depth student teaching experience in the Appleton Area School District.

  • Future expansion of the Wisconsin Virtual School based in the Appleton Area School District and other online charter schools in the state.

  • Possibility of developing data that shows the number of education students each year who gain employment in the field of education.

  • The Add-on Licensure program from the EXCEL Center and how it can benefit districts.

  • A preparatory course for the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards now being offered by the college

  • How cooperating teachers must complete a course in supervision of student teachers. The college offers this course in online, hybrid and face-to-face formats.

  • The involvement of the Appleton Area School District administrators in the COEHS/K12 Advisory Council, which is greatly appreciated by the college.

  • The challenges that new teachers face in the field of Special Education, along with the difficulty of providing new teachers enough student teaching experiences to cover the cross-categorical experience as well as the difficulty of designing programs for EBD students.
