The Jean Erdman and Thomas J. King Scholarship

One $500 scholarship is available for the 2014-2015 academic year. 

Application

This scholarship was started in 2010 by Dr. Jean Erdman and her husband Thomas J. King because they both value teaching excellence and want deserving students to benefit from financial support.

Professor Jean Erdman has worked at the UW Oshkosh College of Education and Human Services since 1984 in the Curriculum and Instruction department. She is a 1972 UW Oshkosh COEHS alum. She co-founded the Fox Valley Writing Project and is past recipient of the Wisconsin Teacher Educator of the Year Award, a past department chair and professor of curriculum. Thomas J. King attended UW Oshkosh and graduated from UW Madison. He works as a bankruptcy trustee for the federal bankruptcy courts. Both Jean and Tom were the first generation in their families to attend college.

Criteria

  1. Applicant must be a full-time undergraduate or part/full-time graduate student in the College of Education and Human Services.

  2. Applicant must be in the Professional Education program or interested in the MSE Curriculum and Instruction Program in the College of Education and Human Services.

  3. Applicant must show promise in a teaching career.

  4. Applicant must show financial need (qualify for financial assistance or the applicant must get a letter from a COEHS faculty member stating there is a financial need).

Selection

  1. Applications are available in the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh College of Education and Human Services Office.

  2. Selection will be completed by a committee composed of representatives from the Curriculum and Instruction Department in the College of Education and Human Services.

  3. In the event the conditions in the future shall render impractical or impossible to fulfill the purposes for which this scholarship has been established, the President of the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh Foundation in consultation with the Dean of the College of Education and Human Services, shall award the scholarship to worthy applicants who most closely fit the above established criteria.

The Award

  1. The scholarship award shall be credited to the recipient’s next tuition obligation incurred within a year at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh

  2. Donor has agreed to provide $200 annually to be disbursed to a student until fund becomes endowed. Once the fund becomes endowed at $10,000 then the value and/or number of scholarships will be determined annually by the selection committee with the UW Oshkosh Foundation and will be based upon income available for this purpose.

  3. The Foundation Board of Directors will distribute income annually, in such proportions as they deem appropriate, in accordance with established Foundation policies. The principal of the fund will be conserved perpetually.
