Suzanne Harriet Pearson Landes and James Hazelton Pearson Scholarship

Two scholarships, $750 each, are available for the 2014-2015 academic year.

Application 

Established in 1991 by Suzanne Harriet Pearson Landes’ husband, Lee Everett Landes, and their son, Stephen Lee Landes. Mrs. Landes, a 1942 graduate of the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh, was a former high school English teacher. Her late brother, The Rev. James H. Pearson, was a 1943 graduate of UW Oshkosh; a First Lieutenant, USMC; and a graduate of the Episcopal Seminary at Nashotah House.

Criteria:

  • Applicants for this scholarship must be part-time or full-time undergraduate or graduate students at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh. Undergraduate students must be in their fourth year of the five-year Professional Education Program in the College of Education and Human Services.

  • Undergraduate applicants for this scholarship must be English majors with plans to teach English at the secondary level. Graduate applicants must have earned a bachelor’s degree in English-either as an “education” student or as a “regular” English major and must be teaching or planning to teach English at the secondary level.

  • Undergraduate applicants must have completed Admission II requirements and have earned at least a 3.50 GPA on all course work, including a 3.50 GPA on all professional education courses.  Graduate applicants must have a 3.50 GPA on all graduate coursework.

  • Financial need may be considered, but will only be a subordinate criterion in the selection process.

  • Other contributions to the University such as (but not exclusively) student committees, debating, music ensembles or government shall be considered in the selection process. (Participation in athletics cannot be considered in the selection process, based on NCAA

  • Applicants must submit two letters of recommendation reflecting an adult judgment (one from a professor, one from an individual outside the University).

  • Applicants must submit a personal letter stating why they feel qualified for this scholarship and what they foresee as their personal and professional goals.

 

Selection:

  • Applications for this scholarship are available in the Curriculum and Instruction Department, College of Education and Human Services.

  • Final selection will be made by a committee named by the Dean of the College of Education and Human Services.

 

The Award:

  • The value and/or number of scholarships will be determined annually by the committee with the UW Oshkosh Foundation and will be based upon income available for this purpose.

  • Half of the award will be held at the Cashier’s Office each semester for payment against that semester’s tuition.
