Robert (Pete) Havens Scholarship

One $500 scholarship is available for the 2013-2014 academic year. 

Robert (Pete) Havens, Ph.D., Professor Emeritus, University of Wisconsin Oshkosh, establishes this scholarship in recognition of the importance of the study of Professional Counseling.

Dr. Havens retired in 2003, completing 36 years as a Counselor Educator at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh. He is a founder of the Department of Counselor Education, developed and supervised the Department’s Counseling Laboratory and led the Department’s successful accreditation reviews in 1992 and 1999.

Dr. Havens has been a leader in the development of standards for the Counseling Profession for over thirty years. He was President of the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision in 1978-79 during which time a national system for the accreditation of Counselor Education Programs was developed.

This award is intended to stimulate and promote the development and professionalism of students preparing to become Professional Counselors.

Criteria:

  1. Applicant must be a current graduate student (full or part-time) majoring in counseling in the Department of Counselor Education, College of Education and Human Services at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh.

  2. Applicant must have a cumulative graduate grade point of at least 3.0.

  3. Applicant must have at least one semester remaining following the semester in which he or she applies.

  4. Applicant must demonstrate, through an application procedure established by the Faculty of the Department of Counselor Education, potential for becoming an effective Professional Counselor as evidenced by:

    1. An understanding of the counseling process,

    2. A celebration of diversity,

    3. A commitment to advocacy

    4. A dedication to leadership in the counseling profession.

 

Selection:

  1. Applications will be available in the Office of the Department of Counselor Education, N/E 1.

  2. Selection will be completed by the Faculty of the Department of Counselor Education.
    (In the event the conditions shall render it impractical or impossible to fulfill the purposes for which this award has been established, the President of the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh Foundation in consultation with the donor and/or the Dean of the College of Education and Human Services, shall make the award to worthy applicants who most closely fit the above established criteria.)

The Award:

  1. Selection shall be completed early enough in spring to include the award in the University's Honors and Awards Ceremony.

  2. The scholarship award will be credited to the recipient's next tuition obligation incurred at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh.

  3. The value and/or number of scholarship awards will be determined annually by the selection committee with the UW Oshkosh Foundation and will be based upon income available for this purpose.

  4. The Foundation Board of Directors will distribute income annually, in such proportions as they deem appropriate, in accordance with established Foundation policies.
