Dr. Mary Drecktrah Special Education Scholarship

This scholarship is established in memory of Mary Drecktrah, who passed away on May 15, 2002. Mary received degrees from UW La Crosse (BS, 1960), Iowa State University (MS, 1965), UW Oshkosh (MS, 1975) and UW Madison (PhD, 1988). She retired in January 2002 as a special education professor in the College of Education and Human Services.

In a career spanning more than 34 years, Mary was an elementary teacher, reading specialist, elementary special education teacher, curriculum coordinator, school assistant principal and principal and special education professor. She received the Distinguished Teaching Award from UW Oshkosh in September 2001.

The Dean of the College of Education and Human Services said Drecktrah was a “…caring intellectual because of her knowledge and her genuine concern for all students with whom she interacted during her time at UW Oshkosh. She represented an exceptional model of team building and vision setting for others in the college.”


  • Applicant must be a full-time undergraduate special education major at UWO who has earned 60 or more credits and has a GPA of 3.5 or better. 

  • Applicant must have at least one semester remaining before graduation 

  • Applicant must be an active member of the Student Council for Exceptional Children 

  • In addition, the following will be considered in making the award (in no particular order of importance):

      • Service: school or community service involving children 

      • Research: involvement in research projects relating to special education

      • Demonstrated leadership in educational or professional organizations 

      • Extracurricular activities (excluding athletics) 

      • Financial need based upon a statement prepared by the applicant

  • Applicant must submit three confidential letters of recommendation: Two letters must be from UW Oshkosh faculty members or academic staff; one letter must be from a secular professional in the community.


  • Applications for this scholarship can be obtained from the Special Education Department, College of Education and Human Services.

  • The student will be selected by faculty members from the UW Oshkosh Special Education Department. 


  • The scholarship is awarded in the spring for application toward the following fall semester’s tuition.
