Clarice Mae Johnson Mandel Education Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 2006 in memory of Clarice Mae Mandel of Madison. Clarice was born in 1921 in Oconto. She attended Oconto schools and earned teaching degrees from Oshkosh State Teachers College/Wisconsin State College-Oshkosh, following in the footsteps of her mother, Martha Saffran Johnson, a 1914 alumna of Oshkosh State Normal School. Clarice taught in Oconto and Goodman schools. After returning to the city schools of Oconto, she met Kenneth Mandel, a fellow school teacher. They were married in 1950 and had three children. Clarice spent several years working with the Wisconsin Department of Revenue in Madison but retained her innate love of teaching as she brought art, nature and children of all ages together throughout her life.
