Brief Bio:

Dr. Mickelson began her career in special education as an early interventionist and service coordinator serving infants, toddlers, and their families in Madison, WI. Her love of working collaboratively with other adults around issues pertaining to young children with disabilities has led her to many opportunities as a consultant and trainer around issues such as inclusion, early intervention, and interdisciplinary practice. Dr. Mickelson has served as a faculty member in early childhood education at the associate degree level where she solidified her passion for personnel development and teacher education. Her work related to personnel development also includes serving as a co-developer of the state-wide Inclusion Credential here in Wisconsin. She obtained her PhD in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis on teacher education from the University of South Florida where she worked across the PK-12 educational landscape around issues of inclusion, teacher preparation and development, and educational policy. Dr. Mickelson was also a doctoral intern with the Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP) at the Department of Education in Washington, D.C where much of her work focused on teacher preparation. Before joining the University of Wisconsin - Oshkosh, Dr. Mickelson was an assistant research professor at the University of Connecticut where she served as the Project Coordinator of the federally funded Early Childhood Personnel Center (ECPC). Her research centers on interdisciplinary personnel preparation for professionals working with young children with disabilities with a particular interest in blended or unified models of early childhood teacher education.  She is dedicated to high-quality teacher preparation both in her practice and her scholarship and enjoys working collaboratively with teacher candidates as well as colleagues at the university and in the field.
