Welcome from the Dean

|
As Dean of from the College of Education and Human Services, I’d like to
extend a warm welcome to you from all of us at the College. As you look
through our website, we hope you’ll get a sense of why we believe this college
is unique in Wisconsin.
UW Oshkosh started as a teacher’s college in 1871 and what was then
known as the Oshkosh State Normal School quickly became Wisconsin’s
foremost institution for educating teachers, utilizing many innovations
for the time. The school was the first such school in the nation to
have a kindergarten and introduced practice teaching (student teaching)
in 1872.

While a lot has changed since those early years, we continue to set the pace for teacher and
human services education:
|
-
We offer the only online human services degree in the Midwest.
-
We operate the largest and only university-affiliated Head Start program in the state.
-
The college’s unique K-12 School District and CESA Outreach Programs
create long-lasting connections with area school districts to better
understand their challenges and determine specific program needs.
-
We have partnerships with over twenty K-12 school districts in northeast Wisconsin.
-
We host two regional K-12 and University advisory groups that explore
better ways to collaborate for the improvement of education in our
region.
-
The College is one of the founding members of the Wisconsin Rural
Schools Alliance and along with CESAs and K-12 districts, are deeply
invested in improving Wisconsin’s many rural schools.
-
We have a superb reputation for preparing excellent teachers, from early childhood education up through school administration.
-
Many of our pre-service teachers explores new boundaries through
teaching abroad, in urban and rural schools and in tribal schools.
-
We also offer a range of professional development opportunities for
those seeing additional teaching licensure along with programs to help
adult learners transition into teaching careers.
I encourage you to explore our site to learn more about the people,
programs and activities that make the College of Education and Human
Services a unique, creative and wonderful place to learn and grow. I
think you’ll see why our College is a leader in teacher and human
services education.
I would also encourage you to come visit us on campus and talk to our professors and staff to learn more about our programs.
