Travel Opportunity
Universidad de las Américas
Puebla, Mexico
Students:
Are you interested in a trip to Mexico next summer?
Would you like to earn 3-6 credits while you are there?
I will again be taking a group of students to Mexico in the summer of 2009. Every other summer we go to the Universidad de las Américas (UDLA) in Cholula, Puebla, Mexico for about 17 days. Tentative dates are: June 20 – July 7.
Students may earn 3-6 credits for one or both of the following courses:
1) Elem/Sec 377/577 Latino/a Language, Learning, and Culture
2) Elem/Sec 349/549 Content Area Bilingual Instruction (requires one week of coursework at UW Oshkosh prior to departure)
Three credits of independent study may be earned if the above courses have already been completed but you would still like to participate in the trip.
There are Spanish language classes, a cultural class, cooking or music sessions and visits to local schools and historical sites during the week. Weekend trips, generally to Oaxaca and Taxco are part of the agenda. Students stay with families specially selected by UDLA to gain a better understanding of the country and its culture.
If you are interested in more information, or in beginning the application process, please contact the Office of International Education in Dempsey or Jenna Graf (graff@uwosh.edu). The cost is estimated to be less than $3,000, which includes airfare, homestay, courses, weekend travel and most meals. (Through a special agreement with OIE, students do not pay tuition at UW Oshkosh for credits they will earn abroad,) Travel monies will be available for ESTRELLA grant participants to defray some of the cost.
A maximum of 12 students will be accepted for the trip, so reserve your seat as soon as possible.
Take care,
Dr. Kathryn Henn-Reinke
