Sustainable Management Minor
open to all majors
NOTE: The pre-requisite to upper-level business courses in this minor is 60 credits earned, 2.5 combined gpa, and there is a limit of 6 credits of upper-level business courses per semester.
The minor in sustainable management aims to give you (in your life as citizens, consumers, future managers and leaders) an understanding of the holistic and systemic aspects of environmental, social and economic issues (the Triple Bottom Line or TBL). We will also provide you with concrete elements of management intended to develop and spread innovative, ambitious and realistic strategies within organizations while utilizing whatever your major course of study is.
The main objectives of the minor are:
to develop the understanding of the economic, environmental and social issues;
to contribute to understanding the issues of sustainable development for the strategic development of a company;
to provide appropriate understanding of the tools necessary for the development of a strategy of sustainable development and of its daily implementation within the company;
to underline the progress made and opportunities that exist in terms of environmental, social innovation and clean technologies;
to stimulate student’s critical thinking about their role as individuals, consumers and future managers in the context of sustainable development
The competitive differentiator of this minor is the fact that it is offered to any major on campus-you do not have to be a business major to take it. This will enable students from letters and sciences, nursing, education and human services to supplement their major with a program designed to give them a marketplace view of sustainable practice. The applied nature of the coursework will arm these students with the capability to recognize and tackle the difficult problems facing us in the 21st century and to take active roles in transforming their organizations.

BIO 104: Ecosphere in Crisis (4CR Lab) or Geology 150 (4CR Lab) or ES 260 (3CR)
A science course that investigates the interrelationship of organisms with each other and their environments. Exploration of the composition and dynamics of populations, communities, ecosystems, landscapes, and the biosphere with emphasis on sustainability.
ES/SOC 261: Environment and Society (3CR)
An introduction to the fundamentals of human-environmental interaction. The course explores how these interactions create problems, and how the elements of social, technological, and personal choices combine to overcome them.
BUS 328: Energy and Facilities Management (1.5CR)
The assessment of current and potential energy systems with emphasis on meeting regional and global energy needs in the 21st century in a sustainable manner. Examination of energy technologies in each fuel cycle stage for fossil (oil, gas, synthetic), solar, biomass, wind, hydro, nuclear, and geothermal energy types, along with storage, transmission, and conservation issues. Focus on evaluation and analysis of energy technology systems and building efficiency in the context of facilities management.
BUS 329: Creating Healthy, Sustainable Communities (1.5CR)
This course provides an opportunity to learn how healthy people, healthy communities and health-promoting environments all intersect at the bottom line. The course will explore business practices that foster employee, community and environmental health. In addition to discussing community-based programming trends and initiatives, the course will also focus on community needs assessment processes, community-based participatory research and enhancing collective efficacy. We will discuss major social issues and how they impact healthy, sustainable communities.
BUS 330: Sustainability Measurement (3CR)
This course is designed to introduce students to the issues surrounding the natural environment; specifically, how daily and long-term business measures and accounts for social and environmental capital. This is a hands-on course in which you will be required to do much introspection, reading, and group discussion. Coverage includes corporate social responsibility and environmental management reporting.
BUS 450: Environmental Management (3CR)
An introduction to the concepts, functions, processes, and objectives of logistics and supply chain management activities. The course covers activities involved in physically moving raw materials, inventory, and finished goods from point of origin to point of use or consumption. It covers the planning, organizing, and controlling of such activities, and examines the role of supply chain processes in creating sustainable competitive advantage with respect to quality, flexibility, lead time, and cost. Topics include customer service, inventory management, transportation, warehousing, supply chain management, reverse logistics, green supply chains, and international logistics.
BUS 464: Sustainability Strategy and Innovation (3CR)
This course builds on the previous courses in the minor to synthesize how companies apply the core drivers and measures to implement sustainable initiatives and the cost/benefits of these activities. We will learn how to identify sustainable business opportunities while at the same time understanding the challenges of working in this dynamic and changing field. You will be part of a team working on applied business projects with regional organizations.
