Germany - Summer 2012

Location: Fulda, Germany

Course: BUS 494/694 and TBD

When: July 2012, for 4 weeks  (blog with photos from January 2012 trip)

Faculty Leader:  Jeff LaVake

Description: In July 2012, Professor LaVake will lead a students to Fulda, Germany for four weeks. Fulda is about 65 miles northeast of Frankfurt, and is the home of Fulda University of Applied Sciences. The students will enjoy exploring the Baroque-style architecture of the city, including many historic churches and castles. The main church (the Dome Cathedral) houses the remains of St Boniface.

During the weekdays students will study Global Management as well as attend a German Language/Culture course where they will learn basic German and some of the history and traditions of Germany.

During some afternoons, students will tour German businesses to compare how they operate with similar US businesses. Other afternoons will include German cooking and dance classes.

One memorable excursion includes a visit to Point Alpha. Point Alpha is located on the former East/West German border pass which is just east of Fulda. Large Soviet and East German forces were stationed in the area as it was considered to be a potential invasion route against the German Democratic Republic and the Eastern bloc countries.

Evenings are usually open for the students to explore the Fulda nightlife.

Over the weekend students will travel to Berlin. In Berlin, they will visit important historic sites including the remnants of the Berlin wall, Checkpoint Charlie, Olympic Stadium, the Holocaust memorial, and the Brandenburg gate. The highlight of this visit is a behind-the-scenes look at the Reichstag, the home of the German parliament (The Bundestag). Students will enjoy shopping and nightlife in Berlin.
