Emphases

College of Business undergraduate students can choose from the following 16 emphases:

 

Business Analytics

This statistically rigorous emphasis was created to meet the current statistical/data analysis needs of businesses; accordingly the emphasis consists of three research-methods courses. Open to all Business and Economics majors.

ECON 472, Time Series Analysis and Forecasting
ECON 473, Econometric Methods
BUS 418, Marketing Analytics

 

Computer Science 

11 credits (requires an approved Business major)

Required courses:  (course descriptions can be found HERE)
CPS 262, Object-Oriented Design and Programming II, 4.0 credits
CPS 271, Data Structures, 4.0 credits

Plus three credits from:
CPS 251, Computer Organization and Assembly Language, 3.0 credits
CPS 331, Programming Languages, 3.0 credits
CPS 337, Advanced Programming in Java, 3.0 credits
CPS 346, Web Software Development, 3.0 credits
CPS 371, Computer Graphics, 3.0 credits
CPS 381, Introduction to the Theory of Computing, 3.0 credits.

Courses in the emphasis may NOT double count for the MIS major.

 

Cost Management

9 credits (requires an approved Business major)

This emphasis is designed for students pursuing careers with significant job responsibilities in cost management and control within industrial settings. Not open to accounting majors.

Enterprise Systems (ERP) Technology Management

9 credits (open to any Business major)

Required courses: (course descriptions can be found HERE)
BUS 319, 415

Choose one of the following:
BUS 411*, 314

*IS Majors must take BUS 411

 

Entrepreneurship and Small Business Management

9 credits (requires an approved Business major)

This emphasis is recommended for students who have a career interest in starting a new business or small business ownership or management. Open to any business major.

Business: BUS 383, 485
Business*: select one of the following: BUS 303, 314, 326, 336, 337, 338, 343, 364, 372, 374, 376,  431, 433, 454

* course selected cannot be a course counted toward major

 

Financial Services

9 credits (requires an approved Business major)

This emphasis will allow students to broaden and expand their skills in financial services while pursuing a major in another area. Not open to finance majors.

Business: BUS 333
Business: two from the following - BUS 327, 334, 336, 337, 338,  432, 435

 

Healthcare Management

30-36 credits (requires an approved Business major)

This emphasis is recommended for students interested in careers in healthcare organizations. The Honors version of any course may be substituted. See a healthcare adviser for general education recommendations in support of this emphasis.

CHEM 101 and 102 -or- CHEM 105 and 106 (meets the requirement for two General Education NS courses)
BIO 105 or 108, 211 or 308, 212 or 319, 233 or 309

 

Information Management

9 credits (requires an approved Business major)

This emphasis is recommended for students who wish to be able to analyze, manage and use information systems within their functional area of expertise in business and to prepare themselves to work with information systems professionals in accessing information needs, developing requirements and implementing solutions. Not open to IS majors.

Insurance

*Business 337 and 437 cannot count for both the finance major and the insurance emphasis.

 

International Management

9 credits (requires an approved Business major)

This emphasis will allow students to expand their knowledge of the international business environment beyond their major. Open to any business major. Not open to students with a minor in global business.

Legal Studies in Business

8-9 credits (open to any Business major)

This emphasis allows the student to focus additional study in private law.

Business: BUS 321 (for non-accounting majors) or BUS 320 (for accounting majors), BUS 422

Urban and Regional Studies: URB/REG 317

 * BUS 403 cannot count for both the Accounting major and emphasis
** BUS 363 cannot count for both the HR major and emphasis

Real Estate

9 credits (open to any Business major)

This emphasis will provide students with knowledge of the financing, ownership, use, management, control, valuation, disposition and legal aspects of real estate.

Business: BUS 326
Plus any two of the following Business: BUS 321*, 338**
Urban and Planning: URB/PLNG 300, 317, 320, 360

* For accounting majors only, BUS 321 may not count as part of the real estate emphasis; rather BUS 422 may be used as a substitute elective for the emphasis

** This course cannot count or both a finance major and a real estate emphasis

 

Retail Management

This emphasis will allow Marketing majors and other College of Business students to acquire deeper knowledge in this field to prepare themselves for careers in Retail Management.

Plus 2 classes from the following:

BUS 373, Marketing Channels
BUS 376, Integrated Marketing Communication

Sales

Open to all majors.

BUS 476, 478, and 479 (must be taken during the same semester as one set of co-requisites)

 

Supply Chain Management

9 credits (requires an approved Business major)

This emphasis will provide students with a more in-depth understanding of the workings of a company — resources, planning, production and distribution of finished goods and services. Not open to Supply Chain Management majors.

Business: one from the following -- BUS 342, 441, 445, 449, 460

 

Tax Planning

11 credits (requires an approved Business major)

This emphasis is designed for those students pursuing careers in financial planning or tax preparation services. Not open to Accounting majors.

Web and Mobile Development

9 credits (open to any Business major)

The information system world continues its rapid change. This emphasis provides an in-depth education so that students are prepared for a career in this area.

Web Presence Management

12 credits (open to any Business major)

Businesses are facing unprecedented challenges in adapting to a new reality of social media, blogs, wikis, collaborative filtering, social search, user-generated content, mobile applications, and social networking. Employers are increasingly looking for people who are able to take advantage of technology tools to improve the way they do business. The Web Presence Management emphasis is designed to provide you with knowledge about these current technologies and media that you can use to supplement your skills in your existing major. By having Web Presence Management on your transcript, you will stand out as someone able to understand and use new media and technologies in business.
