Inspiring Teaching Workshop Series:
Universal Design and Support for Students with Disabilities

In this session, you will be introduced to resources that will help you design a more inclusive course. Tonya Hameister will introduce Universal Design for Learning (UDL) as an effective framework to use to create “opportunity to learn” for all students. Jennifer Hendryx will offer tips on how to design print and online materials to ensure greater accessibility for students with vision, hearing or other forms of disabilities. And Danielle Jones will explain how the student learning experience can be enhanced through campus services and procedures available to support students with disabilities. Finally, often there is confusion about what the laws say about equity and access for students with disabilities. This session will help clarify these laws.  Please come to this informative workshop on how to include and engage all learners through your teaching methods!

The Black Lives Matter marches over the last year and the recent Women’s March bring home the importance of integrating contemporary events into our teaching. These marches lift up the voices of people of color, trans and queer people and women. And, thus, they place at the center lives, experiences and histories of people that have traditionally been marginalized within academic traditions and classroom discussion.

This Roundtable Discussion will focus on how we effectively bring pressing contemporary events and issues into our courses. This open forum will be a collaborative exploration of how we connect the past and present in our classrooms. It will engage the national conversation being held on campuses across the country concerning how we both honor multiple perspectives in the classroom and, simultaneously, stand for social justice. It will explore the national debate concerning safe spaces on campus and how we create such spaces in our classrooms. We invite you to bring and share your best ideas for including in your classroom voices traditionally marginalized from it. Several dynamic speakers will kick off the event to inspire our conversations.

This workshop is a joint collaboration between CETL, the Office of Equity and Affirmative Action and the Office of the Academic Support of Inclusive Excellence, including the LGBTQ Resource Center, the Men of Color Initiative and the Women’s Center.

In this Spring’s Book Club, we will read Dr. Sara Goldrick Rab’s Paying the Price: College Costs, Financial Aid, and the Betrayal of the American Dream. Here’s an overview of the book from the cover: “Drawing on an unprecedented study of 3,000 young adults who entered public colleges and universities in Wisconsin in 2008 with the support of federal aid and Pell Grants, Goldrick-Rab reveals the devastating effect of these shortfalls. Half the students in the study left college without a degree, while less than 20 percent finished within five years. The cause of their problems, time and again, was lack of money. Unable to afford tuition, books, and living expenses, they worked too many hours at outside jobs, dropped classes, took time off to save money, and even went without adequate food or housing. In many heartbreaking cases, they simply left school—not with a degree, but with crippling debt. Goldrick-Rab combines that shocking data with devastating stories of six individual students, whose struggles make clear the horrifying human and financial costs of our convoluted financial aid policies.”

Online Teaching Certification Program

The Online Teaching Certification Program invites instructors interested in getting a certificate in online teaching to register. The program provides instructors with strategies, techniques, and tools for online instruction. It also guides instructors on how to meet the goals of making online learning more engaging, building an online community of learners, and creating a highly interactive online learning environment. As a whole, the program provides ideas and tools to enhance student engagement as well as increase students’ academic success.

The Online Certification Program is competency-based for the three modules in it; if participants have enough background knowledge and experience, they can meet the requirements by simply passing the competency assignments for the modules, thereby, demonstrating the knowledge and skills introduced through them.      

The program is open to all instructors interested in being certified for online teaching. New and experienced online instructors are encouraged to participate in the program. Instructors who are not teaching online are also welcome. Once an instructor enrolls in the program, an instructional designer will contact the instructor to provide further instructions on getting started.

  • See how Turning Point utilizes MS PowerPoint to add interactivity to your presentation.
  • Get hands on with Turning Point in the lab after presentation.

Polling and Games Open Lab

If you were unable to attend the scheduled Polling and Games session, or if you just want to learn more about student response systems, come down to the IDEA lab (Polk 7) on February 22, between 1:00 - 4:00.  We will have four different polling/game systems for you to try out.  Options will include Poll Everywhere, Kahoot, Plickers, and Turning Technologies student response system.  Our staff will be available to help you work with the options and answer any questions you may have.

No registration necessary.
