Academic Advisors, Undergraduate Advising and Resource Center (UARC)

Tuesday, Sept. 22, 3:00 - 4:00 p.m.
Location: Pollock House Conference Room
This session will help new faculty advisors get up to speed for the upcoming advising season while providing a valuable refresher for more experienced faculty advisors.  Topics will include University Studies Program (USP) requirements, reading STAR reports and best practices for effective communication with advisees.

Dynamic Lecturing:
Applying Theatre Skills in the Classroom

Jane Purse-Wiedenhoeft, Theatre Department and Erin Winterrowd, Department of Psychology

Wednesday, Oct. 7, 11:30 - 12:30 p.m.

Location: Pollock House Conference Room
In this session, participants will be introduced to specific skills that actors apply to the interpretation of the written text in order to captivate an audience and communicate effectively with it. You don’t need to be a performer to be an effective teacher, but attention to the objectives of a lecture, voice and diction skills and improvisational speaking strategies will strengthen communication with your students.  Come hear from Jane Purse-Wiedenhoeft, a theatre expert, and Erin Winterrowd, a professor who incorporates acting skills into her own teaching. They will provide you with specific information and applicable tools for lecturing and for wide-ranging methods of interacting effectively with your students.
