Meet Shawn Schmitt
Shawn Schmitt, a senior in Marketing/Finance with a Sales emphasis, took advantage of Career Services while attending UW Oshkosh.
What began with an on-campus interview, ended in a full-time position with Bemis Performance Packaging. A non-traditional student with a young daughter, Shawn took advantage of interviewing on campus with Bemis in June 2013.
He was chosen for their brand new Marketing Co-op position, a position he held July 2013 through January 2014.
"From day one, I knew I was part of the team," said Schmitt. "I felt immersed, and learned everything from computer systems to marketing research to analytics. Bemis had a lot of information coming in, but not a lot of people to consolidate it."
Schmitt went the route of obtaining a co-op versus an internship, an experience he highly recommends.
"I worked 40 hours a week, and took an online internship class at the same time. Looking back, had it been a part-time internship, I don't think it would have been as beneficial. I got to see what it was like to work there full-time. I recommend it 100 percent."
Working full-time, Schmitt was able to make significant contributions to the data and metrics for Bemis in Oshkosh. He was included in team meetings every Friday, where he gave presentations on margin analysis and reports for determining price points.
In addition to everything he learned, Schmitt couldn't stress enough the importance of networking.
"The biggest thing I can recommend to students in their internships or co-ops is to utilize everyone you can in the office. Make connections and network," said Schmitt. Having this ambition went a long way for this UW Oshkosh senior. "I even met the president of the company."
Schmitt experienced his biggest reward during his exit interview upon completion of his co-op.
"I was talking about the co-op, giving feedback about how much I enjoyed my experience, when my supervisor turned to me and offered me a full-time position," said Schmitt. "It couldn't believe it! I was so happy; I accepted the offer right away."
Schmitt graduated from UW Oshkosh on Saturday, May 17, and two days later began his full-time employment with Bemis as a Pricing Assistant with six months seniority.
Given the option of having a few weeks off in-between graduation and starting his position, Schmitt chose to start right away.
Filled with gratitude and excitement, he didn't want to wait, "I loved everything about the experience."
