2013 CAPP Summer Seminars

Professional Development for ALL High School Teachers

These seminars are designed specifically for high school teachers to enrich their curriculum with the latest technology, techniques, and concepts in the teacher’s specific content area. The workshops offer the opportunity to focus on their core content area.

Teachers will be interacting with other high school teachers in their content area, as well as University of Wisconsin Oshkosh faculty and staff, to maximize the opportunity to share knowledge and experience. These workshops are free to all CAPP adjuncts and a small fee for all others. Seminars are offered in the following areas:

$50 for non-CAPP adjuncts

qPCR: This workshop will investigate surface water sampling techniques and will allow participants to use the UWO boat to test water quality parameters and collect water samples from Lake Winnebago.  The students will then return to the ERIC laboratory for sample preparation and molecular analysis of microbiological pathogens.  First day there is a lecture by Julie Kinzleman from the City of Racine Health Department. The first day is 6 hours - 2 hours of lecture/lab and 4 hours of field sample.  The second day is 6 hours of qPCR analysis and data review.

Invited to attend a session of Samantha Looker's Summer 2013 graduate class, English 714. The class, Composition Theory and Practice, focuses on advances in composition theory over the past several decades and addresses methods of assigning, guiding, and responding to student writing. During that class session, students will be discussing a set of readings about writing assignments; these readings will be available to workshop participants if they would like to prepare ahead of time, or they may simply sit in on the discussion. After a lunch break, English CAPP liaisons are partnering with Sarah Bradway to offer a D2L workshop to give instructors specific tips on using D2L in their CAPP classes and using D2L to access professional development resources from the English department. Topics covered: 1)  Urban Renewal or Revitalization projects  (Communities and Change?)  2) The Graying of America: What are the effects of people living longer with higher education? Dr. Van Auken and Dr. Son will discuss their current research with these topics: Oshkosh case study exploring the concept of neighborhood and community and a partnership with the new Communities program at Oshkosh North High School.

Demographic trends in the U.S., with a focus on the characteristics of and outlooks for baby boomers.
