On Wednesday, March 24, we toured the impressive Avenue House in Ampthill. The private eighteenth-century townhouse belonged to Sir Albert Richardson who was an important architect and founder of the Georgian Society. The tour of a fine collection of eighteenth-century paintings and artifacts in the home was given by Sir Albert Richardson's grandson. Our tour was filled with witty humor as we travelled back in time to an eighteenth-century middle-class home. Sir Albert Richardson even refused to install electricity into the home. He believed that in order to truly capture the lives of eighteenth-century families, his home must reflect theirs in every aspect. Can you imagine living by candlelight? Eventually, Sir Albert Richardson installed electricity at the insistence of his wife. Avenue House was a maginificent reflection of the eighteenth century. As we toured the house and grounds, we gained a better understanding of the people of the eighteenth century.
