Hughes
Hall
Cambridge University
| Hughes Hall began in 1885 as the Cambridge Training College for Women Teachers. This makes it one of the newest colleges in Cambridge University's seven hundred and fifty year history. Located a mile to the east of the city centre, Hughes Hall overlooks Fenners, the University's famous cricket ground. In 1895, Hughes Hall moved into new red-brick buildings reminiscent of those at Newnham College, which helped set up Hughes Hall. In 1949, the college's named was changed to Hughes Hall, in commemoration of Miss E. P. Hughes, its first Principal. Men were first admitted in 1973 to read for higher degrees and diplomas, when Hughes Hall became a graduate college of Cambridge University. |

| Accommodations | The Victorian main building of the College was constructed in 1893 and is now listed among national buildings of historical importance. It contains student bedrooms, IT and reading rooms, administrative offices and the main social facilities of the college: the dining room, bar, and common room. A new wing has added lecture and seminar rooms, and adjacent buildings provide most of our student accommodations. |
| Formal Hall | A very important College social activity is dining together in Hall. Lunch and dinner are available in Hall from Monday to Friday. Our catering standards are very high, and our Saturday brunch is famed throughout Cambridge. All students, including those who have private accommodation, are encouraged to attend. On Tuesday and Thursday evenings in term time the arrangement is slightly different and is called Formal Hall |
| Academic Life | At Hughes Hall all student members are over 21 years old and many play an active role in the daily life of the College.
