Scholarships & Other Sources of Undergraduate Funding

1.  Awards and Scholarships:  

Deadlines are nearly all in early February.  Check with the Biology and Microbiology office.  Award amounts may vary from year to year. (They are based on the interest earned on a donated principle.)  All scholarships require at least a 3.0 GPA. 

Charles P. Savino Family Scholarship:  For full time undergraduate Biology or Microbiology majors who have sophomore standing or higher.  The award is, in part, need-based.  Amount is $1250.  Click here for specific information and application form.

Leslie Allen:  For Biology or Microbiology majors (graduate or undergraduate) with a demonstrated interest in ecology or field biology.  The student must have completed 60 credits and have at least one semester of coursework remaining.  Amount is $500.  Click here for specific information and application form.

James Unger:  For full time undergraduate Biology or Microbiology majors who have completed at least 36 cr and will be junior or senior status.  Financial need will be considered.  Award amount is $500.  Click here for specific information and application form.

Sherman Randerson:  For full time undergraduate Biology or Microbiology majors who have completed 45 credits by the end of Fall Interim.  Amount is $100. Click here for specific information and application form.

Edward L. Schwartz Scholarship:  For unergraduate Biology, Microbiology, Environmental Health, Environmental Studies (Environmental Science Emphasis), Medical Technology, Chemistry or Physics majors who have at least one year of school remaining.  Awards are based on academic performance and financial need.  Amount is about $500.  Click here for application form.

Pigeon Lake Field Station Grant-in-Aid:  For undergraduate majors in biology who have a demonstrated interest in ecology or field biology and plan to take a course at Pigeon Lake Field Station.  The award is to help defray the cost of the course.  Amount is $250.  Application deadline tends to be in early April.  Click here for specific information and application form.

Merlin E. Silverthorn Scholarship:  For unergraduate Biology, Microbiology, Environmental Health, Environmental Studies (Environmental Science Emphasis), Medical Technology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Geology, Mathematics or Physics majors who have at least one year of school remaining.  Awards are based on academic performance and financial need.  Amount is about $2500.  Click here for application form. 

2.  Work Study: 
The Department of Biology and Microbiology occasionally has vacancies for work study students to work in the biology stockroom or in the office.  The work tends to be secretarial.  Faculty who have contracts (rather than federal grants) may hire students to do research.  Federal grants prohibit faculty from using federal money to pay work study students.

3.  Internships:

Some companies and organizations will pay students to work as interns.  Please visit Student Research and Internships.

4.  Research Funding: 

Some faculty have federal, state or local grants or contracts that provide funds for student research (contact individual faculty).  In addition, UW Oshkosh has several sources of student funding (see below).

Environmental Health/Beach Research Group:  Each year this groups monitors and studies water quality issues in Wisconsin.  10-20 students per year are paid to help with this project.  It is ideal for microbiology students who are interested in health-related issues.  Applications are due in early February. Faculty Undergraduate or Graduate Collaborative Grants:   Students are paid to do research during the summer.  Applications are due in early February so contact potential faculty mentors during Fall semester.

MacNair Program: This program is aimed at underrepresented students as well as first generation, low income students.  Its goal is to train students for advanced degrees.  Students do research with faculty mentors and take courses to prepare them for the Graduate Record Exams.  Deadline for application is the first of May but applications are accepted until all spots are filled.

National Science Foundation Research Experiences for Undergraduates:  NSF limits the number of UW Oshkosh students to two per year; the remaining 7 come from across the US.  Students receive a stipend, room and board at UW Oshkosh for 10 weeks during the summer while they do research in a laboratory.  Applications are due in mid February.

Proteomics and Functional Genomics Scholars Program:  This provides scholarships for talented but financially needy incoming students.  High school students apply the March before beginning college at UW Oshkosh.
