Fine Arts Major - BFA

Recommended for students who wish to prepare for a professional career in the studio arts, to satisfy entrance requirements for graduate art studio programs, or to become art teachers (Art Education (K-12) emphasis). Students completing the Fine Arts major and the University's baccalaureate degree requirements will earn the Bachelor of Fine Arts degree.

  • Required Units (crs.): 82 minimum

  • Required Foundation and Core Courses (See Selected Emphasis)

  • Completion of a Studio Emphasis in one of four areas

Portfolio Review

All Fine Arts Majors (BFA) will be required to take a Post-Foundation Portfolio Review. The review will take place after completion of the studio foundations courses (Art 111, 112, 114.) Passing the portfolio review is required for entry into the BFA program.

 

2D STUDIO ART EMPHASIS

  • Required Units (crs.): 82 minimum
  • Required Courses
    • Foundation Courses:  Art 111, 112, 114, 209, and 210
    • Core Courses:  Art 142, 234, Three upper level Art History courses (310, 311, 312, 313, 314, 315, 317, 320, 321, 322, 323, 482), and 490
    • Required 2D Emphasis Courses:  30 cr. required, with 12 cr. from one of the following 2D areas and 3 cr. from each of the other areas, and 9 cr. electives
      • Drawing: 204, 304, 334, 404, 434
      • Painting: 241, 275, 341, 375, 441, 475
      • Photography: 245, 345, 445
      • Printmaking: 259, 260, 261, 262, 359, 360, 361, 362, 459, 460, 461, 462
    • 3D Contrast Courses: Select 12 cr. from at least three of the following 3D areas
      • Art Metals: 263, 363 
      • Ceramics: 271, 371         
      • Fibers: 231, 247, 331, 347, 431, 447       
      • Functional Design: 252, 352       
      • Sculpture: 267, 367
    • Advanced Electives: Select 9 cr. from any 300-level or above studio art courses, may include up to 6 cr. of Art History (Art 300, 329, 354, 355, 356 do not apply)

    NOTE: All 400-level studio courses may be repeated.


3D STUDIO ART EMPHASIS

    • Required 3D Emphasis Courses:  30 cr. required, with 12 cr. from one of the following 3D areas and 3 cr. from each of the other areas, and 9 cr. electives
      • Art Metals: 263, 363, 463
      • Ceramics: 271, 371, 471                     
      • Fibers: 231, 247, 331, 347, 431, 447              
      • Functional Design: 252, 352, 452
      • Sculpture: 267, 367, 467  
    • 2D Contrast Courses:  Select 12 cr. from at least three of the following 2D areas

    • Required Emphasis Courses: Art 238, 239, 252, 336, 338, and 438
    • 2D Courses: 12 cr. to be selected from three of the following four areas with 3 cr. from the 300-level
      • Drawing: 204, 304, 334                
      • Painting: 241, 275, 341, 375
      • Photography: 245, 345
      • Printmaking: 259, 260, 261, 262, 359, 360, 361, 362
    • 3D Courses: 6 cr. to be selected from
      • Art Metals: 263
      • Ceramics: 271
