The Fourth of July

The day was a fine one, and was ushered in by the grandest old medley of whistles, bells, cannon, and all sorts of fire-arms. At sunrise our entire population was up and ready to celebrate as sleep was entirely out of the question out of the question...

...Then followed the usual fun of a Fourth of July celebration, such as climbing a greased pole, catching a greased pig, rooster striking, until night, when all repaired to the Hall, where was a splendid display of Fire works, from the balcony followed by a dance in the Hall…
