Soldiers Dinner Saturday was a gala day in the Island City. The ladies of Neenah had extended an invitation to the soldiers of that and surrounding towns to parade of a dinner on that day; and at 1 o’clock some ninety or a hundred returned soldiers assembled at Smiths’ store, and under command of Capt. J.N. STONE, marched with music to the grounds selected for the dinner, just across the bridge on Doty’s Island… tables, bountifully supplied with meats, sweet meats, cakes, pies and good things too numerous to mention, enough to feed a regiment, besides being decorated with a profusion of beautiful boquets (sic). All agreed it was the nicest affair of the kind ever got up in this place. |
