In 1943, the Army Air Corps decided to call up for duty
many of its vast reserve of cadets. Requiring numerous
facilities to provide cadets advanced training, the army
went to the nation's universities, many of which were facing
record low enrollments. With budget problems and a WWI
veteran as president the Oshkosh State Teachers College made
it known to the Army its desire to train cadets. The
school's recent history of flight instruction through the
Civil Aeronautics Administration and eager to participate,
local fly-boy S.J. Wittman, made OSTC a logical choice to
host a college detachment.
