eMentors student

What is eMentors?
It is a program designed to give UW Oshkosh alumni the opportunity to share career experiences and knowledge with UW Oshkosh students and fellow alumni. Mentors are able to connect with students and alumni to discuss career opportunities and issues facing college graduates after graduation.

What does an eMentor do?
Our volunteers – who are mostly UW Oshkosh alumni – share career experiences, advice and knowledge with current UW Oshkosh students and alumni. The goal is to lend insight into the career exploration process. eMentors also may discuss career opportunities and issues facing college graduates after graduation. Mentors are encouraged to help promote personal development by providing knowledge, values, perspectives, networking and resource information.

I am a student or alum who wants to get connected with an eMentor. Where do I start?
First, you must join TitanJobs. eMentors is one part of the TitanJobs Web site. Before you can connect with an eMentor, you must upload a resume to complete the TitanJobs registration process. Once your registration is complete and you have logged into TitanJobs, you will have access to eMentors and all other TitanJobs features.

Upload a resume? I don't have a resume yet!
Your resume doesn’t have to be formal or final. It doesn’t even have to be a professional resume. If you aren’t ready to look for a professional job, TitanJobs could help you find a part-time job right now, on- or off-campus. After you have registered for TitanJobs, you have access to eMentors, along with all the other TitanJobs features.

Where do I sign up for TitanJobs?
Online by visiting www.uwosh.edu/career/TitanJobs.php

Why should I use eMentors in my career exploration or job search?
An eMentor is a great source of information about specific careers, where to search for a job, or perhaps your mentor can connect you to others in the field for networking purposes. You can even ask about interviewing and resume tips. You will benefit most from interaction with an eMentor who currently works, or has worked, in a career field that you are interested in pursuing. You will also benefit from networking with eMentors who had a similar major while attending UW Oshkosh.

What is the cost?

  • For students, TitanJobs is available at no charge. Alumni who want to access TitanJobs for career exploration and job search purposes must pay a $25, one-time fee.
  • eMentors may register as a volunteer and make profile changes at no charge. Creating a TitanJobs account is not necessary to become an eMentor, but it is fine if you want to do both!

What is the commitment level?
As much or as little as you want.

How many eMentors may I contact?
Upon sign-up, eMentors determine the maximum number of students they would like to have contact them per month. That number may reflect the amount of time they are able to give.

How much contact will I have with my eMentor?
You may find that you need an eMentor to answer a few brief career questions. Or maybe your e-mail exchanges will grow to include more detailed information and advice. It is really up to you. We just ask that you respect the mentor’s time.

How long does it take to find an eMentor?
Once you are part of Titan Jobs and have uploaded a resume, the results are immediate. You may begin searching for an eMentor. The time it takes your mentor to respond to your initial e-mail will vary.

What kinds of questions should I prepare to ask my eMentor?
Your questions should be well thought out and prepared ahead of time. They should reflect your career-related interests and concerns.

Typical questions include:

* What degrees or programs do you recommend to someone to advance in this field?
* How important is an internship experience?
* Could you describe a typical workday?
* What parts of your job do you find most challenging?
* Would you have done anything differently to prepare for your present career?

What else do I need to know about my contacts?
The eMentors who have volunteered for the program want to share their experiences and knowledge, and should not be solicited directly for employment. Possible outcomes of your student/mentor relationship may be resume critiquing, internships, job shadowing, and informational interviewing, but they cannot be guaranteed and should not be expected.

Before you contact an eMentor, you should consider your level of commitment to the program. All conversations with your mentor should be conducted in a professional matter. In networking, good impressions are key. Once you have saved a contact, the eMentor will have access to your basic contact information.
