The award was established in 2009 in honor of Russ Young, who served as the head football coach at UW Oshkosh from 1963 to 1976. It recognizes an individual who has demonstrated the ideals of Russ Young's legacy through their record of accomplishments in their career or cause, community involvement, moral character, and positive contributions to the world of sports.
