Five unforgettable highlights for farewell
For my final post, I will take a look back at my 18 month internship at the integrated marketing and communications office and recap five of the many highlights I’ve experienced (although there are so many more).
Highlight 1 – Craig Fiedler interview and story
Just a few weeks into my internship and as one of my first real reporting assignments, I was assigned to write a story on former UW Oshkosh special education professor Craig Fiedler. Diagnosed with cancer, Mr. Fiedler’s days were numbered. He and I met at his home in Neenah, Wis. where we conversed for almost two hours.
What a moving experience it was. His passion for life was still strikingly evident, though he was in pain and trying to cope with why he was sick. The resulting story (which Mr. David Williams methodically helped shape) was recognized by Chancellor Wells and the string of comments helped me appreciate the art and impact of journalism.
Highlight 2 – Admissions view book profiles
Having the opportunity to write student profiles for the view book was the most important assignment I had ever been given. Working with Admissions, I was nervous and meticulous about writing the profiles and the final product was appreciated by those involved. It was a great feeling to see the words in print, knowing thousands of others would also read them.
Highlight 3 – Editorial visit with Chancellor Wells
I was offered the opportunity to travel and sit in on an editorial meeting with Chancellor Wells and a newspaper. I assume many people don’t get such opportunities so early in their careers, but it was exciting to learn and get an inside look at how the Chancellor does business.
Highlight 4 – I Chose UWO
Working on such a comprehensive project taught me how much hard work, excitement and challenge goes into developing, planning and executing a successful project/campaign. More than anything, I learned from the struggles and setbacks our team encountered along the way to win a national award, made possible by an unbelievable team of collaborators and supporters at IMC. Along the way I also learned technical video shooting and editing skills, something I’ve always had a desire to learn.
Highlight 5 – Magic Fridays
I never thought I’d be doing magic tricks for co-workers at an internship. Performing the occasional magic trick at the office helped me learn more about my co-workers, fit into the office culture and show my personality.
Final words: My experience at IMC has been the most vital chapter in the development of my career to this point. I’ve grown as a writer, communicator, co-worker, team member and as a person. Thanks again to everyone at IMC; you have each taught me and helped guide me into the professional world, you will be missed! Always stay in touch!
Sincerely,
Shane Arman ‘10
