Student & Advisor Responsibilities
Student Responsibilities in Advising
- Take initiative to contact, make an appointment with and meet with an advisor at least once per semester (preferably 1-week prior to your registration date)
- Provide your advisor with complete and accurate information regarding your educational plans
- Read and save important documents from the university
- Know and satisfy university, college and major/minor requirements
- Know university and college policies and procedures
- Be prepared for advising sessions - bring your STAR, a list of questions, a pen or pencil, list of possible courses, etc.
- Select and register for appropriate courses with assistance from advisor
- Verify accuracy of all changes made to course schedule
- Check prerequisites before registering for courses
- Take responsibility for your education and the decisions you make

You should expect your advisor to…
- Be knowledgeable about university policy/procedure
- Educate you about general education and degree requirements, and make appropriate referrals regarding requirements for specific academic programs
- Provide information about registration procedures
- Provide a range of options, but leave final decisions, actions and resulting consequences up to you
- Be knowledgeable about campus resources and make appropriate referrals
- Maintain confidentiality (even with parents)
- Respond promptly and professionally to phone calls, e-mails and questions
- Teach you how to read STAR
- Be an advocate
- Be available
- Be accountable

You will be assigned an academic advisor within the UARC in the fall after you complete Odyssey in the summer.
