Credit for Prior Learning

Yeah! This semester five students completed the Interdisciplinary Studies 145 class, Assessment of Prior Learning. They worked hard to express and document learning through work, seminars, teaching and other experiences. Credit for prior learning is not automatic. It takes critical thinking and planning. These students looked at their degree plans, examined which credits they had left to take and explored syllabi to see which of these classes were similar to their learning through experience. Two credits were earned for the preparation course. Students could choose whether or not to then submit a portfolio requesting credit for one or more courses, up to a maximum of 24 credits.

Portfolio evaluation is performed by faculty who teach the relevant courses. Students only take the required Assessment of Prior Learning course once. They can choose to submit more than one portfolio section for needed credits in different departments. Interdisciplinary Studies 145 will again be offered in Spring 2009.

In addition to credit by portfolio development, credit can be earned through the College Level Examination Program (CLEP) and selected military experiences. Contact the ANSR office if you think that you may be a candidate for prior learning credit.

Graduation Project

Sometimes UW Oshkosh students don’t complete their degrees on schedule. Situations arise that can interrupt plans to finish, yet years later students may rekindle the desire to come back. The Graduation Project at UW Oshkosh actively seeks out these former students and helps them to reach their goal of degree completion.

  • The Graduation Project builds on the University’s existing advising services through a special initiative to identify and assist re-enrollment students who “stopped out” before completing their program of studies.
  • Approximately 182 former students, living in 11 states, have responded to the invitation to return and complete their degrees. Since 2004, many have graduated and more are actively working on exploring their options for degree completion. Others have touched base with the university and are hoping to return to class as their lives permit.
  • Staff listen to students’ concerns and limitations, develop a graduation plan, assist them to find classes and provide encouragement to help them finish their degrees.
  • Responses have been positive! The Graduation Project invitation has reminded former students that a strong support system is available and that they will receive help along the way.
