Freshmen Scholarships

UW Oshkosh highly values students who have achieved outstanding academic and leadership success. Scholarships are one way the University recognizes high achievement. The following scholarships are available for incoming freshmen. 

Scholarship Categories

 

Academics

UW Oshkosh Enhanced Academic Excellence Scholarship

Amount  Quantity  Requirements for Consideration Deadline 

  • (10) $2,000 tuition remission, 50% of standard room and board (double room and 15-meal plan), $400 book allowance and $1,500 work opportunity 

  • (5) $2,000 tuition remission and $1,500 work opportunity

  • The above awards are in addition to the automatic $2,250 received by all Excellence Scholars

  • Renewable for a total of 8 semesters pending continued eligibility.

  • Applicants must have been selected by their high school to participate in the State of Wisconsin Academic Excellence Scholars Program. May NOT be an alternate. 

  • Be admitted to UW Oshkosh as a first-year student and have submitted ACT/SAT scores.

Chancellor's Freshman Academic and Leadership Scholarships

George D. Dallas Scholarship

Citizens First Credit Union Scholarship

  • $500

  • Must be members of Citizens First Credit Union (can be a new member to qualify).

    • To be eligible for membership, students must live or work in Winnebago, Outagamie, Calumet, Fond du Lac or Waushara counties; or the City of Berlin or the Townships of Berlin or Brooklyn, all located in Green Lake County; or be a member of the Pickett Co-op.

  • Be a new freshman in the fall immediately following high school graduation

  • Be admitted to UW Oshkosh

  • Have a strong academic record

  • Must have participated in school and community activities

Lucille V. and Ray J. Tack Scholarship

  • Must be graduating from Spencer High School, Spencer, Wis.,

  • Must be accepted to UW Oshkosh

  • Must have a minimum cumulative high school GPA of 3.0 or higher (on a 4.0 scale)

  • Be admitted to UW Oshkosh

Michele Lipschultz Scholarship

  • $1,500

  • Must be admitted FEMALE freshman entering UW Oshkosh the summer or fall immediately following high school graduation

  • Be admitted to UW Oshkosh

  • Must have financial need

  • Submit an essay discussing your financial need and how you have overcome obstacles to pursue education

National Achievement Finalist Scholarships 

Amount  Quantity  Requirements for Consideration Deadline 

  • Credit for resident tuition

  • Awards are renewable with satisfactory academic performance

 Varies

  • Must be a Finalist in the National Achievement Scholarship competition

  • Must submit a copy of Finalist letter to: Scholarship Coordinator, UW Oshkosh, PO Box 2423, Oshkosh, WI 54903-2423

  • Must enroll at UW Oshkosh the fall immediately following high school graduation

(No application necessary.)

Beginning of fall term immediately following high school graduation

 

 

National Merit Finalist Scholarships 

Amount  Quantity  Requirements for Consideration Deadline 

  • Credit for resident tuition

  • Standard room and board

  • $800 book allowance

  • Awards are renewable with satisfactory academic performance

  • Must be a Finalist in the National Merit Scholarship competition

  • Must enroll at UW Oshkosh the fall immediately following high school graduation

  • Must live in a residence hall to receive room/board and book allowance credit.

Earl and Alpha Bowman Scholarship 

Amount  Quantity  Requirements for Consideration Deadline 

  • $500

  • Be a new freshman

  • Must be a biology, microbiology, chemistry, physics, astronomy, geology or psychology major

  • Must submit a  description of a science project or a research paper which indicates your ability to work independently

  • Have a strong academic record

  • In accord with the donor’s desire to encourage more African Americans, Native Americans, Hispanic Americans and females to enter the sciences, preference will be given to applicants from those groups

Phil and Jean Nelson Alumni Scholarship

  • $500

  • Must be a child or grandchild of a UW Oshkosh graduate

  • Be a new freshman

  • Be admitted to UW Oshkosh

  • Have a strong academic record

  • Submit an essay discussing your qualifications for the scholarship and your involvement in extracurricular activities, excluding athletics

Sentry Insurance Foundation, Inc. Freshman Leadership Scholarships 

Amount  Quantity  Requirements for Consideration Deadline 

  • $2,000

    (renewable)

  • Be a new freshman

  • Be admitted to UW Oshkosh

  • Rank in the top 15% of graduating class

  • Must have submitted ACT or SAT scores

  • Must have had significant leadership experience

  • Must major in Business, Mathematics (Applied/Actuarial emphasis) or Computer Science

  • Submit an essay on one of the following topics: (1) How do I know I am a leader?  (2) Leadership in a changing society or (3) A leader or role model for me.

  • Submit a letter of recommendation from a teacher or counselor

Anne Burns Hillenbrand Family Scholarship

Amount  Quantity  Requirements for Consideration Deadline 

  • Resident Tuition and a Paid Internship (renewable for four years), pending satisfactory progress

  • Be admitted to UW Oshkosh

  • Have a strong academic record

  • Be willing to work about ten hours per week in a paid professional experience to enhance the value of your undergraduate education

Delta Sigma Phi Scholarship

  • Must be a new male freshman entering the summer or fall following high school graduation

  • Must have minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5 (on a 4.0 scale)

  • Must demonstrate leadership and involvement in extracurricular activities, excluding athletics

  • Winners must carry at least 12 credits during the fall and spring of the freshman year

  • Winners must attend the Delta Sigma Phi banquet on the second Saturday in December, or other event as determined

Alpha Xi Delta Scholarship

  • Must demonstrate academic achievement, volunteer work and involvement in extracurricular activities, excluding athletics

  • Winners must use award on tuition and/or books during the fall and spring of the freshman year

  • Submit a portfolio that includes 10 to 20 examples from major studio areas.  Five of these examples MUST be from the area of drawing and may include slides or photographs of large items or three-dimensional work.

  • Submit two letters of recommendation

William E. White Debate and Communication Scholarships

  • Be admitted to UW Oshkosh

  • Rank in the top 25% of graduating class

  • Submit a statement about your qualifications for the scholarship and a summary of your communication/debate activities

  • Submit two letters of recommendation. One MUST be from a speech/communication teacher.  The other  letter should be from someone (not a relative) who can address your speech/communication ability.

Erwin G. Ackerman Scholarship

  • Must plan to pursue engineering

  • Be a new freshman entering UW Oshkosh the summer or fall following high school graduation

  • Have a strong academic record, particularly in math and science

  • Submit three (3) letters of recommendation (a math teacher, a science teacher, and a teacher in another academic area)

  • Submit a statement about your interest in Engineering and career goals

  • Be admitted to UW Oshkosh

  • Submit ACT or SAT scores

Nursing, Special Education, Human Services and Social Work

Cheryl L. Mellenthin Nursing Scholarship

  • Must have a strong interest in Geology or Earth Science

  • Be a new freshman

  • Be admitted to UW Oshkosh

  • Submit ACT scores

  • Have a strong academic record, particularly in science and math

  • Submit two letters of recommendation from science teachers

  • Submit an essay of 500 words or less discussing your interest in Geology or Earth Science and your career goals

  • Winners must enroll in two introductory Geology classes during the freshman year—one each in fall and spring
