Early Childhood through Middle Childhood

Birth-Age 11

The Elementary Education EC–MC license is designed for candidates interested in teaching in early childhood and elementary schools. Elementary Education EC–MC students may choose to pursue a minor. Listed below are the steps for obtaining additional licensure.

Transcript Review

  • Submit a transcript review request to see which courses you must complete to obtain licensure for this new developmental level.

Program Application

  • Submit the Add-On Program Application for acceptance into the program to your Program Coordinator at the Center for Additional Teaching Licenses. 

  • A final determination of your individualized course plan will be developed for the license you wish to obtain. 


  • Complete the coursework for your new license at an accredited two- or four-year institution.

  • Courses may be taken on campus or via distance learning. 

  • All courses not taken at UW Oshkosh must be approved by your Program Coordinator prior to enrollment.

  • Compacted courses, both in credit and time, are available for our EC-MC candidates.

Note: Submitting Academic Life Experience in lieu of course deficiencies is an option; contact your Program Coordinator for more information. 

Content Tests

  • Please refer to your Acceptance Letter for the specific content test(s) required for your additional licensure.

  • Pass the Wisconsin Foundation of Reading Test AND Praxis II Exam (Elementary Education: Content Knowledge Code #0014/5014).

  • Praxis II scores are sent to you electronically.  It is your responsibility to submit your scores to the Center


Complete a 3 credit/60 hour practicum in the new developmental area. Tuition is due during the semester in which you are enrolled.

  • The candidate should teach/interact in multiple core components/content areas of the development level. Experience at both the early childhood and elementary levels (EC-MC)/elementary and content area (MC-EA) is required; current license experience will be considered.

  • Submit the required plan and acknowledgement form at least 2 weeks prior to your desired start date.


  • Create a professional portfolio, 
aligned with Wisconsin Educator Standards (PI 34), to document your growth in knowledge, skills and dispositions in the new developmental area.
