This explains what the Normal template is on Word for Mac OS

Microsoft Word uses a template to create, edit, or assemble a document. The default template is called Normal.dot. This global template contains information that gets pulled into your current template, such as default settings, shortcut keys, toolbars, custom menu settings, AutoText entries, and macros.

Macintosh:

    • The file is called Normal on a Mac.
    • It is usually found in the Office folder under Templates.

NOTE: If you are following trouble-shooting instructions that require you to remove "Normal," then delete all occurrences of files named "Normal".
