Windows and Apple Operating System Releases
Windows 8 was released to the general public Thursday, October 25. My staff have been reading reviews and checking what they could of beta releases.
At this time Academic Computing is not planning to do a campus-wide release of Windows 8. One of the major focuses of Windows 8 is the touch-sensitive market, since most of our computers/monitors do not have those capabilities, there is no advantage to a change at this time. Also the recommendations from most, if not all, sources is to wait until Windows 9. We have had luck in the past skipping every other version of Windows OS and our license allows for us to "downgrade" to Windows 7 once/if new computers start shipping with Windows 8.
We will be downloading it and testing it with campus hardware and software. If you have an academic need for the software, we will install it for you. If you feel the need to have this for your home computer, there is apparently a good deal offered on the Microsoft web site ($39.99 for Windows 8 Pro).
OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion)
Apple licensing does not allow "downgrade" so Mac OS X 10.8, aka Mountain Lion, has been released to campus for newly purchased computers. We have been testing it with the rest of our campus software and so far have not noticed any problems, therefore we are planning on releasing Mountain Lion to the rest of campus at the beginning of November. Staff are currently working on a 10.8 upgrade package that will upgrade a machine from 10.7 (Lion) to 10.8 (Mountain Lion) without requiring a reinstall of the entire computer operating system and applications.
