Information Technology department will be expanding our network threat protection to include the wireless networks here on campus.

As part of the ongoing effort to improve campus computer security, on Monday, June 3, the Information Technology department will be expanding our network threat protection to include the wireless networks here on campus. This will be the same type of protection that has been used successfully for the past several years on both the wired and Residence Hall networks. This system assists in protecting campus network users from being exposed to malicious software and computer attacks.

Once the threat protection has been expanded to include the wireless network most malicious attacks will be blocked without any intervention from you, however, if you visit a website that is detected as infected or known to host malicious attacks, a window will pop up to warn you about the site and provide instructions in case you believe the site should be accessible.

Threat detection is one tool we use to help safeguard campus computers and data. Other recommendations include maintaining current anti-virus software, applying software patches, using strong passwords, avoiding scams, and not clicking on links in suspicious emails.

Additional information on safe computing can be found here:

If you have problems accessing the campus wireless network, please contact the campus Help Desk at 920-424-3020, helpdesk@uwosh.edu, or stop in Dempsey 207 for direct assistance.

If you have concerns or questions about this change, please reply to me or call me at 920-424-2368. Thank you for your cooperation in keeping campus student and employee data records safe!

Laura Knaapen
Director, Academic Computing

FootPrints - The New Help Desk Tracking System

FootPrints has gone live today March 28, 2013

We now refer to the Help Desk as the UW Oshkosh Help Desk. A Ticket is now called an Issue. A Client (you) is now called a Contact.

After months of preparation, the new Help Desk issue tracking system (FootPrints) is now up and running. All current tickets in the old tracking system (Magic Service Desk) will be recreated in the new system and email notifications will be sent to each contact of those tickets. You should only notice a few changes to your Help Desk experience.

Changes you will notice:

          1) the Help Desk email address has changed to helpdesk@uwosh.edu (the old address will continue to forward incoming emails to the new address, but will soon be disabled)

          2) the email notifications that you receive will look different

          3) when you call by phone, you may notice that there may be additional questions asked than from previous experiences.

NOTE: before contacting the Help Desk, please try to gather related information regarding your issue (are others having the same problem, what have you tried to do to fix the issue, equipment model and name, etc.). Having such information before hand can speed up the Issue creation process.

Some of the benefits you will experience:

          1) You will now receive updates when changes occur to your Issue status. Some examples of Status are: In Progress-means IT staff have been assigned to your Issue; Resolved-means the work is completed and you have a 5 day review period to verify that the work is completed before the Issue is closed; Pending-means your Issue is on hold until an event occurs or an action is taken (additional information is provided, an ordered part arrives, waiting for a scheduled appointment, etc.)

          2) Once you have received an email notification, you should Reply to that email for any email correspondence regarding that particular Issue. Instructions on how to do so are included in tne email notification sent to you. By following this process, all communication will be stored with that Issue instead of being stored in a separate location. When you receive additional emails regardinging the Issue, check the Issue Notes area of the email for updates or requested information.

NOTE: The email address that is used with FootPrints notifications should not be used for any other types of correspondence. No one is monitoring that email address and FootPrints will ignore any emails that are not a Reply to a FootPrints' email notification. Please use helpdesk@uwosh.edu for such correspondence.

If you have any questions, please contact the UW Oshkosh Help Desk by calling (920) 424-3020, stopping by at Dempsey Hall 207, or emailing helpdesk@uwosh.edu. Thank you

On Suday, March 17, the Networking group will be installing new equipment on the network at the edge of campus. Between 8:00 am and 11:00 am access to the Internet will be interrupted as cables are moved and the new equipment is installed. During the maintenance window Internet access will go up and down multiple times. Internet connections will be unreliable until maintenance work is completed.

The upgrade will increase campus bandwidth available to the Internet from 650 Mbps to 1 Gbps and will introduce additional redundancy to protect against equipment failure.

Standalone work and access to shared drives from campus computers will not be affected by the outage. Other campus resources such as TitanWeb will suffer delays due to background connections to off-campus sites. Access to UW Oshkosh servers from outside will be interrupted.

UPDATE:

Due to unforeseen circumstances, IT will not be able to perform the upgrade that was planned for next Sunday, so there will be no planned internet outage.

If for some reason the client upgrade does not succeed, please first try a reboot of the workstation, then open up AnyConnect again. If there is not any success at this point, please uninstall the AnyConnect client and go to https://vpn.it.uwosh.edu and redo the installation of the client. Most likely the Java web install will fail due to lack of a presence of Java web start in browsers. Internet Explorer has the easiest installation process on Windows.

Hello from Google,

On January 15, 2013, users accessing Google Apps using Microsoft Internet Explorer 8 (IE8) will see the following changes:

- Gmail will automatically forward users to basic HTML view (http://support.google.com/mail/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=15049). Users will have the option to revert to regular view for each login session.
- Users on IE8 can only compose email in Gmail using basic HTML.
Also, a wireless mobility feature will be turned off that is suspected to have caused issues of wireless clients dropping connections and not always working when trying to connect.

Computer Login Job Accounts will expire at the end of 2012

Job accounts, whose assigned supervisors did not request an extension, will be disabled at the end of this year

Email sent to Job Account Supervisors:

Back on July 31, 2012 you received a message stating that the Job Account(s) you supervise were going to expire on August 31. At that time you were asked to contact the Academic Computing Help Desk and indicate if you were still using the Job Account(s) and, if so, request an extension for the coming academic year.

You are receiving this message because you did not contact Academic Computing at that time.

Because that date happened to fall on the weekend prior to the fall semester starting, Academic Computing made the decision to postpone the expiration of Job Accounts until December 31.

This message is your reminder to contact the Help Desk at 424-3020 and request an extension for any Job Account(s) you may be listed as the supervisor of.

You may have changed jobs in the past year and are no longer the supervisor of any Job Account. Academic Computing has no way of knowing of the change so please contact the area you used to work in, if you used Job Accounts, so they will be able to renew the account(s) for the coming calendar year.

If you do not contact the Academic Computing Help Desk at 424-3020 by Friday, December 28, 2012, your Job Account(s) will expire and your student employee(s) will not be able to login when they return to work on January 2, 2013 or beyond.

Job Accounts are set to expire annually to prevent unnecessary login credentials from remaining indefinitely. Your cooperation in keeping the number of accounts needed to a minimum is required.

Thank you for your support,
